BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana redshirt sophomore Haydon Whitehead has been added to the watch list for the Ray Guy Award, which honors the nation's top collegiate punter.
Whitehead is averaging 42.1 yards on 16 punts with a long of 56 yards. He has placed seven punts inside the 20-yard line and four inside the 10. Opponents have returned only four of his 16 punts for 27 yards.
The Melbourne, Australia, native kicked in his first American football game ever in the season opener vs. No. 2 Ohio State. Whitehead downed the Buckeyes three times inside the 20-yard line and averaged 41.0 yards on nine punts with a long of 49.
He followed that up with four more punts inside the 20 in the Hoosiers 34-17 win at Virginia last weekend, with three going inside the 10 and his career-long 56-yarder.
Whitehead enrolled in 2017 spring classes and participated in practice. The 21-year old played Australian Rules Football for 15 years.
He made his first trip to the United States when he took his official visit to IU in December 2016. Whitehead trained under Nathan Chapman and John Smith at Prokick Australia, a training ground for punters and kickers in Melbourne.
