BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Big Ten Conference announced Monday that Indiana senior Maddie Latino received the conference's Offensive Player of the Week award. The senior forward provided both game-winners in the Hoosiers' first two home games of the season last weekend, adding her first career hat trick to the win over Miami.
Latino is on a three-game scoring streak after a stellar home weekend, where she racked up eight points on four goals. She delivered the decisive 2-1 goal against Central Michigan, pulling the Hoosiers away after they trailed in the first half.
Latino created all three goals in Indiana's 3-2 overtime win against the RedHawks on Sunday afternoon. She scored a goal with a minute left in the first half to tie the game at 1-1; again tied the game to force overtime on a rebounded corner with 10 minutes to play; and won in sudden victory by tapping in a rebounded save on the first penalty corner of overtime. The first hat trick of her career is the 15th in Indiana field hockey history.
Winning just a week after sophomore Ciara Girouard claimed the conference's weekly attacking honor, Latino picks up the Big Ten's offensive player of the week award for the second time in her career. Latino was named Co-Offensive Player of the week in 2015 after providing an assist to a win over No. 16 Iowa (9/25) and scoring twice in an upset against No. 14 Northwestern (9/27).
Latino now has 19 career goals, which is tied with Niki Orciuch (2002-05) for ninth all-time in Indiana's record books. Latino's six points in the win over Miami moves her to 54 in her career (8th – IU history). She also vaulted to a tie for sixth all-time with seven game-winning goals for Indiana (Morgan Miller, 2003-06). Her three game-winners this year ties a personal season best.
Now tied with Girouard this season on points (10) and goals (5), the Hoosier scoring tandem ranks in the top 20 nationally in goals per game (0.83/game, 4th in Big Ten) and in the national top 50 for points per game (1.67/game, 7th in Big Ten).
