Bloomington, Ind. – After a disappointing five set loss to Samford earlier in the day, the Indiana volleyball team responded with an emotional five set victory (15-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22, 15-10) against Florida Gulf Coast to close out the Hoosier Classic on Saturday at University Gym.
With the win, the Hoosiers finish the non-conference portion of their schedule at 11-1, the best start since the 2010 team started 12-0.
"Our resiliency was really good tonight," IU head coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan said. "We got thumped in the first set and you wonder how a young team is going to respond. I could not have asked them to respond better. We played 10 sets today and we probably played our best set in the 10th set today."
Redshirt sophomore Kendall Beerman led the Hoosiers as she tied a career-high with 19 kills. She added 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.
Beerman and sophomore Deyshia Lofton earned spots on the Hoosier Classic All-Tournament Team.
Freshman Kamryn Malloy came into the match in the third set and added a spark for the Hoosiers as she finished with nine kills on 12 attempts with no errors, for a .750 hitting percentage.
The Eagles (7-5) started strong as they hit .433 with 15 kills and two errors in the first set. Indiana hit just .143 in the opening set and lost the opening set, 25-15.
The Hoosiers evened the match with a win in set two, but Florida Gulf Coast came back to win the third set, 25-22.
In the fourth set both teams executed offensively, but the Hoosiers were a level above as they hit .485 with 18 kills and two errors.
Malloy, Lofton, Beerman and junior Elizabeth Asdell each recorded four kills in the set and although it was tied 10 times, the Hoosiers came out on top, 25-22.
The Hoosiers and Eagles split the first eight points of the fifth set. Indiana went up 6-4 on a FGCU error and a kill by Malloy.
The Hoosiers scored six of the next eight points to build a 12-6 in the final set. Beerman scored the final point for the Hoosiers to win the match.
Up next the Hoosiers begin Big Ten play with two home matches. On Wednesday, the Hoosiers take on Illinois and on Saturday Indiana will welcome Maryland to Bloomington.
