EVANSTON, Ill. – The No. 1-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team defeated the Northwestern Wildcats, 2-0, in Big Ten play on Sunday afternoon in Evanston, Ill.

With the victory, IU improves to 5-0-2 on the season overall and to 1-0-2 in Big Ten play. With the loss, Northwestern falls to 1-6 on the year and to 0-3 in conference action. With the win, IU is unbeaten in the team's first seven matches for the 12th time in program history.

Freshman Mason Toye and junior Cory Thomas led the way for IU, as both had a goal and an assist in the win. Junior Trevor Swartz also tallied an assist for the Hoosiers.

Freshman goalkeeper Trey Muse made two saves in notching his fifth shutout of the season. Indiana has allowed just two goals in the first seven matches this year, the fewest allowed in seven games since 1993. The five shutouts in the first seven matches is also the most for IU since 1993.

In the 10th minute, the Hoosiers found an early goal to take a 1-0 lead over the Wildcats. Working on the right side, Thomas sent a cross in to the 18-yard box that found the foot of Swartz. The junior's shot was blocked, but the deflection fell to Toye, who buried his shot from inside six yards to record his third goal of the season.

Leading 1-0 at halftime, the Hoosiers dominated the first 45 minutes in Evanston. IU out-shot the Wildcats, 8-3, and had a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal.

In the 64th minute, the Hoosiers sealed the victory on Thomas' first goal of the season. After NU was unable to clear an IU cross, Toye settled the ball and found a wide-open Thomas, who did well to finish from eight yards out to give Indiana the team's winning margin of 2-0.

For the game, Indiana out-shot the Wildcats, 17-8, getting seven shots on goal to just three for Northwestern. Corner kicks were 6-3 in favor of IU.

The No. 1 Hoosiers will return to Bloomington to host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights on Friday, Sept. 22 at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
