Three Hoosiers named to All-Tournament Team
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 4 Indiana University men's soccer team continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 3-0 victory over South Florida. The Hoosiers (4-0) clinched the championship for the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic with the win against the Bulls (1-2), passing No. 19 Butler on goal differential.
Junior Andrew Gutman launched Indiana onto the scoreboard with an early strike in the first half, with Thomas Warr picking up the assist for leaving Gutman a gem from short distance. Trevor Swartz converted his second penalty kick of the weekend while Rashad Hyacenth found the target inside the last 10 minutes of play.
For the third time this season, freshman goalkeeper Trey Muse and his back line delivered a clean sheet between the posts. Muse faced 13 shots and made three saves, including a diving parry against a well placed shot in the first half.
The adidas/IU Credit Union Classic announced this year's All-Tournament team at the conclusion of Indiana's game with South Florida. Hyacenth, Grant Lillard, Timmy Mehl, and Francesco Moore were the Hoosiers named to the All-Tournament squad. Lillard earned the tournament's Outstanding Defensive Player award, while Hyacenth received the Outstanding Offensive Player honor.
"It was a good result, and it's great to be 4-0," Indiana head coach Todd Yeagley said after the win. "We talked a lot before the game about where our line of confrontation is, where we can take things away, and I think what you saw in the second half was a real disciplined, lock-down performance of in that regard. It's a very mature performance in a game where we'd like to have the ball more than we did, but at the end we have to find ways to win games of this manner so I was pleased with their ability to adapt."
Indiana broke the deadlock with Gutman's score in the 15th minute, the result of some excellent build up on the attack. Timmy Mehl played a long ball to Gutman, who took a hard first touch into the box. Gutman played a pass to Thomas Warr, who laid it off for Gutman and a close-range finish from six yards.
The Hoosiers' lead doubled after the break thanks to a coolly delivered penalty in the 62nd minute. Indiana forced a South Florida handball in the box to draw the opportunity, and Swartz did well to finish his second shot of the weekend from the penalty spot.
Hyacenth placed the finishing touches on the shutout win in the 81st minute, making sense of a scramble by the South Florida Defense. Austin Panchot entered a cross that caught a deflection, but not a clearance, by the defenders. Hyacenth collected the loose ball on his head and hammered it goalward for his second score of the season.
The No. 4 Indiana Hoosiers will hit the road to start Big Ten play on Friday, Sept. 8 when the team travels east to face league rival and No. 2-ranked Maryland at 7:00 p.m. ET. The match will be broadcast live across the country on the Big Ten Network.
