Game Notes: Indiana at Virginia

Setting The Scene
• Indiana heads on the road for the first time in 2017 on Saturday, Sept. 9, against Virginia at Scott Stadium (61,500; Natural Grass). Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. EDT and ACC Network Extra will broadcast the game.
• The Hoosiers have won eight of its last nine non-conference games, including three straight on the road (Missouri, Wake Forest and Florida International).
• Virginia leads the all-time series 2-0 with a 47-7 victory in Charlottesville on Oct. 10, 2009, and a 34-31 triumph in Bloomington on Sept. 10, 2011.
• IU is 6-14 all-time against ACC foes with its last win coming at Wake Forest, 31-24, on Sept. 26, 2015.
• Indiana concluded its home-and-home series with the Demon Deacons in 2016, which makes this the third straight year an ACC opponent has appeared on the schedule.
• Junior running back Mike Majette (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior) is the lone Hoosier from Virginia.
The Coaches
• Tom Allen made his debut as Indiana head coach at the 2016 Foster Farms Bowl. He was named IU's 29th head coach on Dec. 1, 2016. The New Castle, Ind., native joined the Hoosiers as associate head coach/defense on Jan. 15, 2016. A 2016 Broyles Award nominee, Allen engineered one of the top defensive turnarounds in the country, as Indiana improved substantially in every major statistical category. (full bio on page 15)
• Bronco Mendenhall is 3-10 in his second season as Virginia head coach. Mendenhall owns a 102-53 (.658) record in his 13th overall year with a previous stop at BYU (2005-15).

• IU threw for 420 passing yards against No. 2 Ohio State, tied for the seventh-most in program history and the most ever by a Hoosiers team vs. the Buckeyes.
• Quarterback Richard Lagow completed 40 passes, second in program history, on 65 attempts, the most in program history, for 410 yards, fifth in program history, with three touchdowns.
• He is the only player in Indiana history to post two 400-yard passing games in his career.
• Wide receivers Simmie Cobbs Jr. (11-149-1) and Luke Timian (10-72-0) became the third duo in IU history to record double-digit receptions in the same game, and the first since 2010 (Damarlo Belcher and Tandon Doss).
• Linebacker Tegray Scales finished with a game-high 12 tackles (9 solo), his fourth-straight game in double digits and the 11th of his career.
• Since the start of 2016 Scales owns 10 10-plus tackle games, which shares second nationally. He leads all defenders with 23.5 tackles for loss and 102 solos, and shares seventh with 138 total stops during that span.
