Canada (Nacouzi) and Australia (Williams) finished second in their groups
VOLOS, Greece – While most students at IU enjoyed their time off this Labor Day weekend, IU water polo sophomores Joelle Nacouzi and Mollie Williams endured the group stage of the 2017 FINA World Women's Junior Water Polo Championships. Nacouzi's Canadian team emerged in second-place of Group C, which hit the water last Saturday, and Williams guided team Australia to second-place in Group B.
Nacouzi led Indiana's standout sophomore pair with four goals for Canada, scoring twice in the closing group stage win over Serbia. Williams added two goals and helped Australia triumph in their second and third group games, forcing three shutout quarters in those wins.
A regular on Canada's Junior National Team, Nacouzi helped guide her countrywomen to a 12-7 win over Serbia in their opening game with an 8-3 lead by halftime. After suffering an 8-5 loss to Italy in their second game, Nacouzi scored twice in a thorough 14-4 win over Serbia.
Williams returned to action after earning a sixth-place finish with Australia at the World University Games, which ended just two days before she set off for Volos. The Australians began their weekend with a loss to the host team, Greece, but rebounded on day two with a thrilling 9-8 win over China. Australia's four goals in the third quarter held off China's 3-0 rally in the fourth for the narrow win. Williams and the Aussies closed the group stage with a dominating 11-4 win over South Africa, taking second place in their group.
