No. 3 Indiana’s Dominant Defensive Effort Leads to Draw at No. 2 Maryland
9/8/2017 10:35:00 PM | Men's Soccer
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 3-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team used a dominant effort, particularly on the defensive end, to earn a 0-0 draw at No. 2 Maryland on Friday night in College Park, Md.

The draw is the fourth-straight in the series between the two teams, as each squad moved to 4-0-1 overall on the season and to 0-0-1 in Big Ten conference play. The IU defense dominated a gifted Maryland team, not allowing the Terrapins a single shot on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Trey Muse notched his fourth shutout of the season.

"We had full control of the game," IU head coach Todd Yeagley said following the match. "Other than the first 20 minutes when we let them have a little of the ball, it didn't go anywhere. We created three or four great chances to win the game, with other good shots as well, but most importantly we didn't have to make a save on the night. That says a lot about our defending, because this is as good an attacking team as we will see and I thought we frustrated them and created a lot. This is a disappointed group with this result, I think they will walk away very confident that this team has potential to do something this year."

The Hoosiers are undefeated in their first five games for the second-straight year and for the 14th time in program history. The four shutouts in the first five matches of the season is a first for IU since 2005.

Freshman Mason Toye and junior Andrew Gutman led Indiana with four shots each, with both getting two on goal. For the match, IU out-shot the Terrapins, 14-7, including a 6-0 advantage in shots on frame. Corner kicks were 12-3 in favor of IU.

The Hoosiers were the more dangerous team in the first half, out-shooting the Terrapins, 5-2. IU got three shots on goal in the first 45 minutes, while Maryland was unable to get any on frame. Corner kicks were 2-1 in favor of Indiana.

Toye had two of the Hoosier shots on goal, while Gutman had the third effort for IU on frame.

The best chance for IU came in the 35th minute, on a nice give-and-go with Cory Thomas, Gutman cracked a shot at goal that was saved by the UMD goalie, but the rebound fell to the foot of Rashad Hyacenth. The senior's effort, however, missed just wide from six yards.

After a scoreless second half, the match headed to overtime with the score knotted at 0-0.

Indiana thoroughly enforced its will on the Terrapins in both overtime sessions, out-shooting Maryland, 5-1, with UMD not getting a good look at net in either OT period.

In the 96th minute, Gutman nearly won the match for the Hoosiers with a great shot from distance. Working on the left side, the junior cracked a low-liner to the far post, only to be denied by the Maryland goalie, Dayne St. Clair, on a dive.

Just seconds later, Buckmaster cracked a beautiful, half-volley off a cleared corner that seemed destined to be the winner, only for St. Clair to make a sprawling save to his right, somehow saving the ball and keeping Buckmaster from glory.

In the second overtime, it was Toye's turn to nearly win it for the Hoosiers. With just 90 seconds left in the match, the freshman had a look from eight yards out, but just sailed his effort high and over the bar.

The No. 3 Indiana Hoosiers will return to Bloomington to host Big Ten rival Michigan at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET and the match will be broadcast live nationally on the Big Ten Network.
