ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Freshman guard Bendu Yeaney and senior guard Tyra Buss chipped in 18 points each as Indiana battled No. 23 Michigan but came up short, 84-79, at Crisler Center on Wednesday night.
Four players scored in double figures backed by a career-high from Yeaney who also added four rebounds and a season-high four steals as Buss's performance included five assists, two blocks and a steal. Senior forward Amanda Cahill added 16 points, four rebounds and two steals while junior forward Kym Royster finished with 13 points and four boards.
On the night, Indiana (8-10, 1-4 B1G) shot 50.8 percent from the floor and 76.4 percent from 3-point range. They struggled from the 3-point line, shooting just 35.7 percent (5-for-14) and were dominated on the boards, 38-18.
Michigan (14-4, 3-2 B1G) was led by 23 points each from freshman Hailey Brown and senior Katelynn Flaherty. The Wolverines shot 54.4 percent on the night, 50 percent from the 3-point line and 93.3 percent from 3-point range.
Exchanging buckets for the first few minutes, Indiana took a one-point lead, 7-6, on a Yeaney 3-pointer with 5:36 remaining. But in the next minute, the Wolverines would go on a 6-0 run to force a Hoosier timeout. Coming out of the timeout, sophomore forward Bre Wickware's offensive board led to a jumper at the elbow by Cahill to end the run. IU would keep it within three on a Yeaney swipe and Buss transition layup, 14-11, with 1:38 left. But Michigan would get the final say in the quarter, hitting the runner 3-pointer with time expiring to go up 17-11 after one.
The Hoosiers would open the second quarter as Buss found Royster on the left block. U-M would get its largest lead of the half, 20-13, on a 3-pointer by Nicole Munger to counter but Indiana would use its own 6-0 run to make it another one-point game on a Penn steal and jumper with 6:19 remaining. Four ties would be exchanged down the stretch, as Michigan used layups by Flahrety and one from Deja Church as the half expired to go up 36-31 at the break.
IU would come out of the break energized, winning the third quarter, 27-21. Yeaney, who scored nine of her 18 points in the third, would take over and score three consecutive buckets to come within one, 41-40, with 7:30 remaining. The Wolverines answered from long range and would go up by four with just under six minutes to play before Cahill would connect for the Hoosiers' answer. With less than a minute to play, Buss and Royster combined to take its first lead since the first quarter but Michigan would cut it to one on a last chance layup as Indiana led 58-57.
The game would be back-and-forth to the end, featuring six lead changes and four ties in the fourth quarter alone. IU would take a lead after Penn connected from the left wing for a triple with 8:10 to go. Cahill would be taken out of the game with her fifth foul with 7:07 to play and a conventional 3-point play for U-M's Munger tied the game back up. Wickware gave Indiana the lead back on a corner 3-pointer, 69-67, but Michigan answered the call yet again as ties would be exchanged at 71-all and 73-all. Yeaney connected with 2:46 to play and would prove to be the final field goal of the night as the Wolverines built up a five-point lead and secured free throws in the bonus to seal the win.
