THE COACHES
• Archie Miller is the 29th head coach in Indiana men's basketball history. He won his 150th career game with the triumph over Northwestern. The 39-year old native of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, comes to IU after serving the previous six seasons as head coach at the University of Dayton, where he won Atlantic 10 Conference regular season championships in 2016 and 2017. He was Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year in 2017. He guided the Flyers to a 139-63 record (69.8) and a 68-34 mark (66.7) in the Atlantic 10. He took Dayton to the NCAA Tournament each of the last four years, with the Flyers advancing to the Elite Eight in the 2014 Tournament. UD was nationally ranked in 3 of Miller's 6 seasons (2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16).
• Tom Izzo is in his 23rd year of leading the Spartan program. MSU assistant coach Dane Fife played four years at IU from 1999-2002. Fife was a member of a squad which won a share of the Big Ten title in 2002 and advanced to the 2002 NCAA Championship game.
NEWS & NOTES
• One of the best defensive efforts in years and a hot second half shooting performance carried IU to the win over Northwestern. IU held the Wildcats (who came in averaging 74 points per game) to 46, the third lowest total the Hoosiers had allowed in a Big Ten game since 2000. They also limited the visitors to 26.8% shooting (the 2nd lowest output for an IU opponent since 2000). The Hoosiers shot 60.9% in the second half.
• Junior Juwan Morgan is 9th in the league in scoring (17.5), 6th in rebounding (8.3), 5th in steals (1.5) and 7th in field goal percentage (61.8%) in Big Ten play. It was his offensive rebound off a Morgan missed free throw and assist in the final seconds that propelled IU to a comeback win earlier this season against Notre Dame.
• Fifth-year senior Collin Hartman is battling a right shoulder injury which caused him to miss the Minnesota game, but he came off the bench to post 10 points and 5 rebounds in 27 minutes against the Nittany Lions. He followed that up with 6 points, 3 boards and 5 assists against Northwestern. He had 18 points against Wisconsin and is averaging 9.8 points in Big Ten play.
• With the Hoosiers down key contributors in Davis and Hartman, freshman Justin Smith was inserted into the starting lineup at Minnesota and came though in a big way. He scored 20 points and hit the go-ahead shot in the final minutes. He had 8 points and 5 boards against Northwestern.
• Senior Josh Newkirk had 16 points, 4 assists and did not commit a turnover in 30 minutes against Penn State. The Hoosiers are 5-1 in his career when he scores 16 points or more in a game. He is averaging 14.0 points in the last 2 games.
