Castle brings deeply experienced senior class into his second season
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana water polo team embarks on their second season under the watchful eye of head coach Ryan Castle, loaded with the ingredients needed to make a special season. All seven players in last year's starting lineup are back, led by All-Americans Mollie Williams and Kelly Matthews, and the Hoosiers only lost two players to graduation.
But the road to Los Angeles is treacherous, and it begins with a trio of top-25 games and an international exhibition at the UCSB Winter Invite. If Indiana can leave this opening slate on a high note, an exciting home weekend at the Hoosier Invite is certain to follow.

A Seasoned Season
The Hoosiers are back in the water with one of the most experienced groups in recent memory. They return all seven of their starters from last year, a group that combined for 253 of IU's 286 goals in 2017.
Six players enter the season with at least two years in the starting lineup, while Jessica Gaudreault, Sarah Myers, and Kelly Matthews begin their fourth season as starters for Indiana.
All-American Prospects
Amongst the Hoosiers back in 2018 are two honorable mention All-Americans from last season, Kelly Matthews and Mollie Williams. Matthews is a three-time All-American with at least 60 goals and 25 assists in each of her three seasons; Williams joined the team two weeks before the start of last season to provide 42 goals, 27 assists, and a team-leading 46 steals. The pair combined for 15 hat tricks in the Hoosiers' 31 games.
Fluid Five
Leading the way for the Hoosiers this season will be their deeply talented five-woman senior class. Jessica Gaudreault (697 saves, 4th IU history) is on pace to become one of IU's all-time greats between the posts. In front of her are Kelly Matthews and Sarah Myers, two of Indiana's top field defenders and most potent creators on the other end. Jennifer Beadle and Sarah Young round out the group, as they look to build from breakout seasons in 2017.
Matthews (207 goals) is chasing history and three seniors are on the cusp of crossing the century mark on their career goal totals. The class has earned five All-Conference honors in three seasons.
Return Invite
This weekend marks Indiana's second consecutive trip to the annual UCSB Winter Invitational, hosted on campus at UC Santa Barbara. Their 2018 slate begins with three top-25 programs including the first game in program history for No. 25 Fresno State. After that, the Hoosiers return to face familiar west coast foes, No. 16 UC San Diego and No. 5 Arizona State. The weekend concludes with a unique exhibition opportunity against China's Senior Women's National Team.
Fresh Faces
Indiana lost just two players to graduation from last season while bringing five newcomers into the fold. The Hoosiers' initial signing class delivered a California quartet to Bloomington: Carlie Crumbaugh, Jennifer Hanling, Juli Hilovsky, and Jessica Rodriguez. Over the semester break, Indiana added Hannah Calvert, the first South African player in IU Water Polo history, to their freshman group.
Of Note...
• Senior Jennifer Beadle (99 career goals) is one score away from becoming the second active Hoosier with triple-digit scoring figures.
• Due to a rule change that allowed water polo teams to hire a second assistant coach, the Hoosiers welcomed Taylor Dodson to the coaching staff this summer. Dodson previously served as the assistant at Wagner College (2016-17).
• Nine Hoosiers hail from three countries outside the United States, including head coach Ryan Castle (South Africa) and assistant coach Emily Carr (Australia).
