Weaver claims another ranked foe; Oliver extends win streak in mat return
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana's wrestling team packed the U-Gym on Friday night when they hosted Michigan State. The teams delivered a hard-fought meet to the national viewing audience on Big Ten Network, but the Spartans (5-5, 1-3) came out on top, 18-15. Indiana (6-5, 0-4) split the bout card with Michigan State, 5-5, but two wins by bonus points pushed the Spartans past the winning post.
19th-ranked Cole Weaver (141) triumphed in the marquee match of the evening, topping No. 20 Javier Gasca (11-6) with a 2-1 win by decision. Leading 1-0 as he entered the final period of a highly defensive match, Weaver needed a long ride to push ahead of a potential tie. He got that and more, climbing to 1:37 on the riding time clock before Gasca broke free. The victory was Weaver's first this season in a Big Ten dual meet and his 20th (career high) on the year.
Another Hoosier ranking at No. 19, Devin Skatzka (174), collected his second Big Ten dual win by decision, 4-1 over Logan Ritchie. Skatzka (17-7) dropped Ritchie early in the first and gained nearly a minute of riding time, adding a full third period on top to take the point.
Elijah Oliver (125) sparked a 9-0 run on the team score with his 11-8 decision win against Rayvon Foley (19-6). Back for his first match since the dual meet at No. 1 Penn State (12/17), Oliver uncorked a 6-2 lead with a pair of takedowns and a two-point tilt. He added a couple of escapes in the third to another takedown to hold of Foley's late charge, extending his seven-match win streak. Oliver (15-6) is now 3-0 in Big Ten dual meets this season.
The most exciting match of the evening came at 184 lbs. between Norman Conley and Michigan State's Shwan Shadaia. A member of Indiana University's Army ROTC, Conley (11-12) invited his fellow cadets to Friday's meet. They packed the house and roared at any acknowledgement of the Hoosier sophomore.
Conley delivered what they came to see: a 3-2 win by decision to secure the first Big Ten dual victory of his career, resulting in the loudest cheer of the night from the "Buddy Section". He scored the match's only takedown in the first period by countering Shadaia's opening shot.
Sophomore Garrett Pepple (133) earned his first Big Ten dual meet win of the year on a 6-2 decision over Matt Santos. Pepple (11-12) scored a reversal to ride out the second period, and padded his riding time in the third with another takedown to give Indiana a 6-0 lead.
Michigan State mounted a comeback in the second half that resulted in hard-fought decision defeats from Dillon Hoey (165) and Jake Kleimola (197) in their U-Gym debuts. Hoey showed aggression in his varsity debut but came up short against Austin Hiles; Kleimola had a 2-2 tie through two periods until Nick May escaped from his hold.
This meant, with the meet tied at 15-15, that the heavyweight winner would give their team its first Big Ten win of the year. Fletcher Miller (285) and Christian Rebottaro provided theatrics with the match tied at 2-2 late in the third act.
The Spartan pulled ahead with an escape and fired a shot. The points didn't come for Rebottaro until Michigan State's coaches challenged the no-call. Officials reversed the decision, awarding a takedown and a 5-2 lead to Rebottaro, but with the call came controversy. Miller gained an escape but couldn't find another takedown to tie it up.
