EAST LANSING, Mich. – Indiana raced out to an early lead and avoided a second-half upset as it came away with a 69-65 win over Michigan State on Saturday afternoon in Breslin Center. Senior guard Tyra Buss scored her 2,000th point in the win, becoming the sixth ever player at Indiana to reach the career milestone.
Buss led the way with 28 points and dished out seven assists as Indiana picked up its first victory in East Lansing since 2009-10. Senior forward Amanda Cahill added 17 points and nine rebounds. Freshman guard Jaelynn Penn also contributed double figures with 13 points as Indiana wins for the first time in East Lansing since the 2009-10 season.
The Hoosiers (9-12, 2-6 B1G) shot 45.3 percent in the win, including a 11-for-18 mark from 3-point range (61.1 percent) and were 71.4 percent from the free throw line (10-for-14). On the opposite end, the Spartans (14-6, 4-3 B1G) shot 43.9 percent from the floor and were just 1-for-12 (8.3 percent) from the 3-point line. Four players scored in double figures, led by 16 points from junior forward Jenna Allen.
IU opened up the game shooting a staggering 86.7 percent (13-for-15) as it took control by making 12-straight field goals with Buss going 5-for-5 from 3-point range. She reached her 2,000th point in the midst of a 17-point run for the Hoosiers as she connected on a left corner 3-pointer with 4:03 remaining. They would go 7-for-7 from 3-point range with Buss knocking down four and Cahill dropping in a pair to give their team a 33-14 lead.
After Indiana pushed its lead up to 26 on a 9-2 run to open the second quarter, things would cool off offensively as both teams combined for just eight field goals in the quarter. Michigan State would finish off the half with back-to-back field goals, cutting into the 45-32 Indiana lead at the break. In the third quarter, the Spartans would outscore Indiana, 21-16, as it cut the lead to under double figures for the first time with 4:01 to play. They came within as few as seven with a minute and a half left in the quarter, but free throws from Cahill and freshman guard Keyanna Warthen to make it a 10-point lead again. Nia Hollie would get the final say in the quarter as her drive to the bucket with four second left made it a 61-53 lead for Indiana.
Michigan State's Sidney Cooks would score the first six points to open up the fourth quarter as Indiana used a timeout with 6:19 to play. Buss scored a layup with a little over six minutes to play, but IU would go scoreless for nearly three minutes as the Spartans came within three, 65-62. After exchanging missed buckets, Penn hit her third 3-pointer of the day, on a feed from Buss, from the left corner with 2:34 remaining to put IU back up six, 68-62. Coming out a timeout, MSU's Victoria Gaines kept the Spartan's hopes alive as she hit from beyond the arc. Both teams had opportunities in the final minute of play, as the Spartans best chance at trying to force overtime by redshirt senior Branndias Agee rimmed in and out with eight seconds to play. After a couple fouls to give, Michigan State would put Indiana in the bonus with Buss knocking down one in the bonus with one second remaining to help close out the win.

"I'm just really happy for this group. You know, we've been so close and a few games here of late and we found a way to win. We needed that last stop and although she got it off (Branndais Agee) it wasn't a great look, it could've gone either way, but finally something good happened for this group. I'm just really proud and happy for these guys because they just continue tokeep fighting and I'm really happy with the outcome. We got the win a lot of ways both from our hot start, obviously first half, but then got some big stops. Tyra was blistering hot in the first half you know from the outside of the arc and she's mentioned before that she's never won here before. Even last night when she and I were walking out after dinner you could just tell that she was ready to have a big day for us and we needed it. We needed her to have a big day in order to give us ourselves a chance to win. I thought she played both sides of the ball and did a great job. We knew going into this season that she was going to break records and it's just another one that she can check off so happy that she's able to secure 2,000 points."
Senior guard Tyra Buss
"It means a lot to score 2,000 points. Like I said before, I've just worked really hard and I think my work ethic is paying off, but what was most important was going to Michigan State and getting the win so it's extra special that we won the game. I can celebrate with my teammates, so I'm definitely just very honored and worked really hard for this."
