BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior forward Amanda Cahill recorded her 1,000th rebound as she collaborated with senior guard Tyra Buss to each drop 20-plus points as Indiana got past Wisconsin, 69-55, on Wednesday night at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
Buss led with a game-high 27 points and four assists while Cahill poured in 22 points, including a 4-for-4 performance from the 3-point line. She grabbed a game-high eight points as she picked up her 1,000th rebound in the win. She becomes the third player to ever grab 1,000 rebounds in program history and the second to score 1,600 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.
From the floor, Indiana shot 49.1 percent and 41.2 percent from 3-point range. The Hoosiers completed the night with an 83.3 percent clip at the free throw line (10-for-12) and won on the glass, 33-27. Wisconsin (8-14, 1-8 B1G) shot 42.0 percent from the floor and were held to just 23.1 percent from the arc.
Freshman guard Jaelynn Penn added eight points and five rebounds while freshman guard Bendu Yeaney added five points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks as Indiana won its second-straight game.
Indiana came out with a 21-13 lead after the first quarter, thanks in part to a 10-point run that kicked off with one Cahill's three 3-poitners in the opening half. Marchese got the offensive bucket to fall as Penn stepped in to cap off the run with 2:10 to play as Indiana shot 56.3 percent in the opening quarter. They would push their lead to as many as 14, in the second quarter, as Cahill got one of her 3 3-pointers to fall to go up 33-19 with 3:02 remaining.
The Badgers would close the half after that with back-to-back field goals as IU went silent from the field but held a 33-25 advantage. In the third, Wisconsin came within six but a floater by Buss with 7:06 left and two at the line pushed IU's lead back to 10. With a 48-38 lead after three quarters, Wisconsin would make another push at the Hoosiers as it got back-to-back buckets to come within eight. Cahill had the response as she drained a jumper from the elbow. The lead would come back down to six with 4:23 to go as Buss took over with five-straight points followed by a Cahill open on the right baseline on a dish by Buss. Free throws down the stretch in the bonus helped Indiana close out the win, its third-straight in the series with the Badgers.
QUOTABLE
Head coach Teri Moren
"It was a great win, it's great to be home and it's great to have two seniors like Tyra and Amanda, who I thought showed up in a big way tonight. In timely moments when it seemed like Wisconsin was making a run at us, one of those two kids came up with something big. I am really happy for Amanda Cahill. There has not been a kid that deserves any award or accolade more than B, because she has but in the time and the effort since she has been here at Indiana. She has been a great pleasure to coach, and to be around her as she continues to get better. Just to be a part of what she has accomplished is really exciting, and I hope that she can share this with her teammates tonight."
