BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the second straight weekend the Indiana women's tennis team won both matches of a doubleheader, this time with wins over Cincinnati (4-1) and Xavier (6-1) on Saturday at the IU Tennis Center.
The Hoosiers (4-0) played three freshmen and showed incredible resiliency throughout the day.
In the final match of the day, freshman Michelle McKamey found herself down 5-2 in the third set. McKamey won three straight games and would eventually force a tiebreak that she won 7-1 to win the match.
Freshman Jelly Bozovic improved her singles record to 4-0 in dual match play and has not dropped a set in singles through four matches. Bozovic won 6-4, 6-4 against Cincinnati and 7-6, 6-3 against Xavier.
The Hoosiers didn't start the way they wanted in doubles against Cincinnati as the Bearcats claimed the point and a 1-0 lead in the match. The Hoosiers came back to win four of the five singles matches that finished, for a 4-2 victory.
Against Xavier, it came down to the No. 2 doubles match to decide the point and junior Madison Appel and freshman Michelle McKamey won it for the Hoosiers, 6-3.
In addition to McKamey, Appel and freshman Olga Zavarotnaya battled for three-set wins in singles play.
After four matches IU head coach Ramiro Azcui said his team is getting better and showing their depth.
"I've been very pleased with the way our freshmen have been playing this season," he said. "They are getting great experience and coming through for us. We continue to improve in our preparation and performance on match day and I'm excited to see this team moving forward."
