BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Former Marshall standout Morgan Zerkle has joined the Indiana Softball coaching staff as a graduate student manager, head coach Shonda Stanton announced on Wednesday.
Zerkle played all four seasons at Marshall under Stanton, who was at the helm of the Thundering Herd for 18 years prior to joining the Hoosiers in June.
"I'm very excited to have the opportunity to come to Indiana and further my education while also being able to work amongst the elite IU Softball coaching staff," said Zerkle.
A 2017 NFCA All-American, Senior CLASS All-American and Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American, Zerkle was selected by the Scrap Yard Dawgs in the 2017 NPF Draft. The native of Milton, W. Va. finished her Marshall career atop the record books in batting average (.451), triples (14) and stolen bases (162). In addition, she was second all-time in slugging percentage (.594), on-base percentage (.489), runs (181), hits (289) and total bases (381).
"Having been coached by our staff, Zerkle is familiar with our system and will be able to relate to what our current student-athletes are experiencing, which will provide us insight to better teach, motivate and challenge our players," said Stanton. "Her presence will heighten our team's expectations having daily interactions with someone who has accomplished so much at the collegiate and professional level."
"I personally am excited for Zerkle to join Team 45 and have the opportunity to receive an incredible education from Indiana University and be a part of Big Ten Softball," continued Stanton.
Zerkle was named the 2017 Conference USA Player of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year, in addition to being a four-time All-Conference and NFCA All-Region selection. Off the field, Zerkle was a member of the Conference USA All-Academic Team every year in which she was eligible and was regularly named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll.
This past summer, Zerkle competed in the USA vs. Japan All-Star Series with the USA Softball National Team, as well as the World Cup of Softball XII in Oklahoma City. In addition, Zerkle was invited to this week's tryouts for the 2018 USA National Team.
Zerkle, who will join fellow graduate student manager Michelle Huber, will pursue her master's degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in athletic administration/sport management.
