SEA ISLAND, GEORGIA – Indiana redshirt junior Jake Brown finished tied for 25th recently at the Jones Cup Invitational played at Ocean Forest Golf Club this past weekend (Jan. 26-28). The field included many of the top amateur golfers in the country.
Brown posted scores of 83-71-69 over the three days for a score of 7-over par 223.
"The tournament was a blast," said Brown. "For the first round, the course was brutally tough and I was not able to get comfortable. The next day, with virtually no wind, I was able to birdie my first hole and continued to gain confidence. And day three was even better. I started with another birdie in round three and built on it. All-in-all, I was very pleased to be able to bounce back after my first round and gain confidence going into the spring season."
In round one, the average score for the 77 golfers in the field was 78.14 due to difficult scoring conditions and a difficult golf course and Brown was able to limit the damage to bogeys and avoid the large number.
Then in round two, scoring conditions turned slightly more favorable, with the field average sitting at 74.99 and Brown was able to play his second nine in 2-under par to finish with a 71 to beat the field average by nearly four shots.
Sunday's final round saw Brown card a 69, which was five full shots better than the average for that day and saw him vault 20 spots up the leaderboard to tie for 25th.
Brown leads the Hoosiers with a 72.47 scoring average with one top five finish and two top 10 finishes.
The Hoosiers open the Spring portion of the 2017-18 schedule at the Big Ten Match Play Championship on Feb. 9-10 at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida.
