OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Seniors Tyra Buss and Amanda Cahill have been named two of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS award, announced by the organization on Thursday.
Sixty NCAA® men's and women's basketball student-athletes who excel both on and off the court were selected as candidates for the 2017-18 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate basketball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Buss and Cahill, both All-Big Ten Preseason honorees, are leading Indiana this season, not only in season statistics but putting their names in the record books. Buss is leading Indiana with 20.6 points per game, 4.3 assists per game and shooting 44 percent from the floor. The Mt. Carmel, Ill. native set the school scoring record against Penn State on Wednesday night and has currently scored 1,931 career points while setting records for free throws made (536) and free throws attempted (715).
Cahill is averaging 13.4 points, a team-high 8.5 rebounds per game and 3.1 assists per game while shooting 44.1 percent from the floor. The Cheryl Miller Preseason Watch List honoree has seven double-doubles this season and currently ranks tied for fourth all-time in school history in that category. She also leads the team with 18 blocks and ranks seventh all-time (101).
The duo is the only pair from the same school on either the men's or women's Senior CLASS awards list and two of three Big Ten candidates on the women's list.
Each of the 30 candidate classes will be narrowed to fields of 10 finalists in February, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Men's Final Four® and NCAA Women's Final Four® this spring. For more information on each of the candidates, visit seniorCLASSaward.com.
