Williams, Rodriguez land on honor roll
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) announced Wednesday, January 31 their selections for their conference weekly honors. After last weekend's stellar performance between the posts, IU senior goalkeeper Jessica Gaudreault tabbed this season's first Defensive Player of the Week honor for Indiana.
Gaudreault delivered four superb shifts in the cage at the 2018 Hoosier Invitational, recording 24 saves, three steals, and an assist over 88 minutes. In her biggest games of the weekend—against No. 14 UC Santa Barbara and No. 25 Iona—the senior made 10 saves apiece and helped keep IU on track for their 4-0 weekend.
Opening the weekend against Toronto, Gaudreault guided IU's 13-1 first half by making three saves, allowing just one score late in the first period. Her effort, combined with sophomore Davis Simmons' cage time in the second half, held Toronto to just 1-of-8 from power play advantages.
Versus the weekend's toughest opponent the 14th-ranked Gauchos, Gaudreault made 10 saves and held UCSB scoreless in the second and fourth quarters. That allowed Indiana to come back in the final eight minutes to win the contest, 7-6, from two unanswered scores in the fourth. Gaudreault also made three steals, matching a career high, and held the Gauchos scoreless on all six power play chances.
Gaudreault rose to the occasion for another double-digit save total against the Gaels. She also tossed an assist to Megan Abarta on a fast break in the third quarter, one of Abarta's four scores in the nine-goal win. Against McKendree, Gaudreault made one save and allowed zero goals in her one-quarter shift.
The honor is Gaudreault's fifth career weekly honor awarded by the CWPA, after earning four such accolades in her 2014 sophomore season. Gaudreault (230 career saves) now ranks third on IU's career saves leaderboard, passing 2016 graduate Mary Campbell (208) over the weekend.
In addition to Gaudreault's award, sophomore Mollie Williams and Freshman Jessica Rodriguez landed on the CWPA's weekly honor roll. Williams finished the weekend with five goals, three assists, and two steals, leading IU to victory over UCSB with a career-high four goals in the first half alone. Rodriguez saw action in just one game but provided Indiana's game-winning goal in the fourth quarter against the Gauchos, the second score of her budding career.
