Hoosiers Trounce No. 1 Seed Penn State, Fall to No. 2 Seed Michigan State at Big Ten Match Play

PALM COAST, Florida – On the first day of play at the Big Ten Match Play Championship, the Indiana men's golf team posted a 5-1 win over Penn State in the morning and before dropping the afternoon match to Michigan State by the same score.
The tournament is being held at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida.
Indiana's six points through the first two rounds leaves them in fourth place in the East, but still within striking distance of Michigan State in first place (10 points)
All 14 men's golf programs from the Big Ten are competing this weekend and are split into either the East or West division. The Hoosiers are seeded sixth in the East while Penn State is the No. 1 seed and Michigan State is the No. 2 seed. The Nittany Lions were ranked No. 39 in the country according to GolfStat.com entering the tournament and the Spartans were No. 48.
In the morning match, The Hoosiers won five matches against the Nittany Lions, highlighted by a 5&4 win by Jake Brown. Brock Ochsenreiter won his match by a 2&1 margin, Brendon Doyle claimed a 4&3 win and Trevor Ranton came out on top of a 3&2 score. The final match on the course was Ethan Shepherd, who went to the final hole with a 1-up lead and held that lead to give IU the commanding win.
In the afternoon session against Michigan State, the Hoosiers found a Spartans team that found its groove and cruised to the 5-1 win over IU. The highlight of the match was Shepherd improving to 2-0 on the day with a dominating 6&5 win. Jack Sparrow was able to battle to the 17th hole before falling by a 2&1 score. Brown and Doyle both lost by a score of 5&3 while Ochsenreiter dropped his match, 4&3, and Ranton lost his, 7&6.
Indiana will take on No. 7 seed Rutgers at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday. Their afternoon match will be determined by other results in the morning.
