PALM COAST, Florida – The Indiana men's golf team picked up a pair of thrilling wins on Saturday to finish in fifth place at the Big Ten Match Play Championship at Hammock Beach Resort, the best finish since a fourth-place finish in 2016.
In the morning session, the Hoosiers tied with Rutgers, 3-3, and were able to get the win via tiebreaker.
And then in the afternoon, it came down to the final hole of the final match on the course before the Hoosiers pulled out the 3.5-2.5 win against Illinois, who is ranked No. 12 in the country.
The match against the Fighting Illini came down to the final match on the course – IU freshman Ethan Shepherd vs. Illinois' Bryan Baumgarten. Shepherd was 3-up with four holes to go before Baumgarten won the next three holes to square the match. However, it was Shepherd that would respond with a par on the final hole to win the hole and give the Hoosiers the match. The win also improved Shepherd to 4-0 on the weekend.
Jack Sparrow also logged a win against the Illini, posting a 1-up win in his match with Giovanni Tadiotto, who is ranked 190th in NCAA Division I college golf. And the third win came from Brendon Doyle, who won three consecutive holes to close out the 2&1 win over Michael Feagles, the 103rd ranked collegiate golfer according to GolfStat.com.
Jake Brown held a lead over Nick Hardy, who is ranked No. 46 in the GolfStat rankings, for nearly the entire match, leading by as many as 3-up with six holes to play. But Hardy was able to battle back down the stretch and halve the match to earn a half point for both teams. Brown is the highest ranked IU individual, checking in a No. 245.
Brock Ochsenreiter lost a tough 3&1 match to Dylan Meyer from Illinois and Trevor Ranton was right in his match until the end before dropping a 2&1 decision to Brendan O'Reilly.
The morning session saw IU take on Rutgers to close out the East bracket play. Due to fog to start the day, the morning session matches were reduced to just nine holes.
Brown won his match by a score of 3&2 while Doyle (2-up) and Shepherd (2-up) also claimed wins. Rutgers also recorded three wins so the match was determined by a tiebreaker, which was the most holes won and the Hoosiers won that, 7-5.
The Hoosiers are back on the links March 17-18 at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular at Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida.
