Hoosiers Split First Day of Triton Invitational

Indiana, UC San Diego steal show with overtime battle
LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Hoosiers began their road return with split results in the first leg of their Triton Invitational weekend. The Hoosiers (7-2) opened Saturday with yet another classic against the hosting Tritons (4-4), but fell in overtime for their first loss in six games. The afternoon contest saw Indiana take a turn for the better when they beat Iona, 13-5, in their rematch.
Senior Jennifer Beadle paced Indiana's offense with six goals, registering hat tricks in both contests. Joelle Nacouzi followed with five scores over two games, netting her first hat trick of the year against the Gaels.

Indiana and UC San Diego etched another chapter into their hard-fought series, playing their third-ever overtime contest. After a 1-1 first quarter that featured Beadle's opening goal, her first of three in the game. The Hoosiers uncorked three straight scores in the second to erase the Tritons' lead and build a 4-2 advantage at intermission. Sarah Myers opened the run, followed by Nacouzi's back-to-back goals.
The Tritons mounted a comeback with a 3-0 run to start the second half, but Indiana closed the third quarter with two unanswered scores from Beadle and Kelly Matthews to hold a one goal lead.
The game blew wide open down the stretch. The Tritons gained a temporary lead after scoring with 3 minutes left. Teams exchanged goalless possessions until the final minute, when Beadle completed her hat trick and tied the game at 7-7. UC San Diego once again took a late lead on a five-meter penalty with 24 seconds to play, forcing the Hoosiers to call a time out.
The ensuing IU power play worked to perfection. With one second remaining in regulation, sophomore Emily Powell received the feed and drilled the equalizer to force overtime.
With less than 30 seconds to play in the first overtime period, the Tritons found their game-winner on a power play opportunity.

Indiana returned to the pool determined to end the day on a high note and did so with their 13-5 win over Iona. Five Hoosiers scored more than once in the win, led by hat tricks from Beadle and Nacouzi.
Sarah Myers got scoring started on Indiana's first possession with the 94th goal of her career. Iona gained an equalizer on a power play, provoking the Hoosiers into a 5-0 run that stretched halfway through the second quarter. Astoundingly, Beadle completed her hat trick alongside goals from Matthews and Nacouzi in that span. Before the first half ended Matthews found another score, while goals from Karrie Kozokar and Jessica Rodriguez stretched Indiana's lead to 9-3 at the break.
Rodriguez notched a new career high to start the third, scoring her second goal on the Hoosiers' first possession of the half. Kozokar also found another later in the quarter while Jessica Gaudreault and the IU defense held Iona scoreless in that eight-minute clip.
Nacouzi completed a hat trick, the fifth of her young career, with two scores in the fourth quarter. The sophomore found the back of the net just seconds after the quarter sprint and etched her third on a power play with two minutes to spare.

The second leg of the Triton Invitational begins Sunday afternoon with No. 19 Loyola Marymount, the first meeting between the Hoosiers and Lions since 2012. The Lions narrowly dropped their weekend opener to No. 10 UC Davis, 11-10, but entered Sunday's matchup with an 11-4 win over CSU East Bay.
The winner between Indiana and Loyola Marymount advances to Sunday's ninth-place game, set for an 8:20 p.m. ET opening sprint. They pair into a consolation bracket with No. 13 UC Santa Barbara and No. 11 Long Beach State.
