Redshirt sophomore Norman Conley completed his unbeaten weekend at home with a one-point decision victory in the ninth bout of the afternoon. Conley's third Big Ten dual win of the season was his biggest yet, pushing past Max Lyon with a takedown after escaping at the start of the third period.
Conley adds the victory to his win by forfeit on Friday night against the No. 14 Illini.
"I was looking forward to the match on Friday, hoping for an upset opportunity, but I used that night off to keep my energy which helped in the win today," Conley said. "The coaches have been helping me out a lot with my effort mentality in the match, so it feels pretty good. We still have a long season with the postseason coming up and I'll wrestle all of these guys again at Big Tens, so I have to keep a good attitude and not get complacent."
The Boilermakers brought a pace to Sunday's meet that paid dividends in the five decisions won by four points or less. That started in the heavyweight bout, where Jacob Aven opened Purdue's lead with his decision over Fletcher Miller. The match was tied at 2-2 entering the final period but two escape points and a late takedown sealed Miller's fate.
After Purdue's major decision at 125, Garrett Pepple took the mat for a scrappy bout with Ben Thornton. In another 2-2 tie after two periods, Thornton quickly broke free and held his lead to the buzzer. At 141, No. 13 Cole Weaver saw his 2-1 lead leave in the third after No. 17 Nate Limmex broke Weaver's ride and scored a Boilermaker takedown.
Four defensive points had Alejandro Raya (149) within striking distance late in his bout. After his first escape in the third period, Raya only trailed by one but Austin Nash delivered another drop to clinch the decision.
A highly-anticipated Midlands rematch came in the meet's eighth bout between No. 18 Devin Skatzka (174) and No. 9 Dylan Lydy. The two exchanged shots yet remained scoreless after three minutes; but the match opened in the second with seven points exchanged, the 4-3 advantage leaning towards Skatzka. Lydy flipped a switch in the final act with a 5-1 run that included two takedowns.
