IOWA CITY, Iowa – Indiana baseball (16-5, 1-1) split a doubleheader with the Iowa Hawkeyes on Friday afternoon. The Hoosiers took the first game by a score of 4-2, while Iowa pulled out a 5-1 victory in the second game.
Game One
Junior Jonathan Stiever put together a strong start, surrendering just one run and three hits in seven innings to improve to 3-1 this year. Sophomore Cal Krueger tossed two innings of relief and picked up his second save of the season.
Four Hoosiers recorded multi-hit games, as junior Logan Kaletha, junior Luke Miller, junior Ryan Fineman and freshman Drew Ashley each had two hits in the game. Junior Matt Lloyd homered, while Kaletha, Fineman and senior Laren Eustace each drove in a run.
Lloyd got the scoring started with two outs in the top of the second, as he hit a line drive home run to the opposite field, his fourth of the year, to make it a 1-0 lead for the Hoosiers.
Iowa knotted things up in the third inning. With one out, a triple by Ben Norman led to a sacrifice fly RBI by Boe Mitchell to tie it
Kaletha helped the Hoosiers retake the lead in the top of the sixth, as he knocked out a leadoff home run, his fourth of the year, to make it a 2-1 IU lead. The Hoosiers were not finished, as Miller laced a double down the left field line, then scored on a two-out RBI single by Fineman.
The Hoosiers added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning. A single by Sowers, a walk to Fineman and an intentional walk to Lloyd led to Eustace being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it a 4-1 game.
Iowa's Justin Jenkins hit a solo homer in the eighth, but that is all the Hawkeyes would get off Krueger.
Game Two
Indiana was held to just two hits in the back end of the doubleheader. Iowa starting pitcher Brady Shanuel struck out 11 in seven innings.
Iowa got to Indiana starter Pauly Milto early, plating two runs on a two-out single and a bases loaded walk to jump out to a 2-0 lead. That lead was extended in the second when Tyler Cropley hit an RBI double to extend the lead to three runs.
Miller provided IU's lone scoring in the top of the eighth inning. Indiana got the first two hitters on via a hit by pitch (freshman Sam Crail) and a single (Kaletha). Crail would score on Miller's sacrifice fly, but that would be all for the Hoosiers.
The Hawkeyes got that run back in the bottom of the eighth on a solo home run by Cropley.
Indiana and Iowa will play the third game of this Series on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. ET.
