TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Eleventh-ranked Indiana baseball (17-5, 1-1) earned a 5-3 victory at Indiana State on Wednesday night at Bob Warn Field.
The Hoosiers tallied 10 hits as a team, and were led by senior Logan Sowers, who went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Junior Ryan Fineman also homered in the contest, as he went 2-for-4 as well. Freshman Sam Crail added two hits in the win and junior Matt Lloyd tallied an RBI.
Junior Tim Herrin, a Terre Haute native, picked up his first win of the season as he went four strong innings of relief allowing four hits with four striekouts. Senior B.J. Sabol added two scoreless innings while sophomore Cal Krueger earned his third save of the season.
Fineman roped a one-out offering from Tristan Weaver to left center field for a solo home run in the second inning. The lead was short lived as the Sycamores plated a pair in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead, but consecutive groundouts to the left side of the infield stranded two Indiana State base runners.
The Hoosiers spun two, two-out singles for a run in the third to tie the game at two-all. Junior Luke Miller ripped a single to center field and found his way to second on a wild pitch before he came around to score on Sowers' RBI knocker to left field.
Indiana went ahead for good in the fifth and spun a walk into two runs. Miller took a free pass to first base before Sowers smacked a shot to left field to drive in two and give Indiana a 4-2 lead. From there, the Hoosiers' bullpen strung together three scoreless innings before an insurance run was added in the ninth inning. Sophomore Jeremy Houston walked and advanced on a wild pitch. Lloyd padded Indiana's lead to 5-2 with an RBI single.
Indiana State added a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth.
Indiana is back in action on Thursday as it hosts Butler at 6:05 p.m.
