Murphy and Dawson Named Big Ten Athletes of the Week
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After a strong performance at the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge, two Hoosiers have been named Big Ten Outdoor Athletes of the week announced by the league on Wednesday.
Junior Joe Murphy collects his career first men's Big Ten Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week after he won the 1,500m run and set a new personal record of 3:44.24. The Indianapolis, Ind. native currently has the fastest time in the Big Ten, the third best time in the nation and the third best time in the East Region of the NCAA. Murphy's personal record is the 20th best 1,500 meter time in Hoosier history.
On the women's side, Khayla Dawson earns her career first women's Big Ten Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week. Dawson launched the shot put 16.72m (54' 10.25"), which is a new personal record for the sophomore, to bring home a first place finish. The Charlotte, NC native currently sits within the top-5 marks across all rankings. She has the best mark in the Big Ten, second best mark in the East Region of the NCAA and the fifth best mark in the nation. Dawson's personal record is the fifth best shot put mark in Indiana University track and field history.
Joe Murphy and six long distance teammates will travel to Stanford, Calif. this weekend to compete in the Stanford Invitational. Khayla Dawson will be back in action Friday, April 6 and Saturday, April 7 at the Spec Towns Invitational hosted by the University of Georgia.
