Indiana’s unique senior class ends home slate with season’s biggest game
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Two pivotal moments in the Indiana water polo season converge on one Saturday morning in Bloomington. The No. 13 Hoosiers meet their Big Ten arch rivals, No. 9 Michigan, for their final home game of the 2018 season. The celebration of Indiana's illustrious senior class will be short-lived, for the Hoosiers circled this game on the calendar at the start of the season.
But for Hoosier fans, Saturday's game will be the final opportunity in Bloomington to watch Jennifer Beadle, Jessica Gaudreault, Kelly Matthews, Sarah Myers, and Sarah Young, a class that has combined for 599 goals, 409 assists, 618 steals, and 916 saves in their careers.
Last Action: Trio in Loretto
Last weekend the Hoosiers rekindled conference rivalries and earned their first CWPA win of the season in an unbeaten weekend at Saint Francis University. Indiana survived a battle with No. 22 Harvard for an 11-10 win before knocking off Bucknell later in the day, 11-8. A 15-5 win over the weekend hosts put the Hoosiers back in the win column on their conference record.
Sarah Young scored 10 goals, marking her second double-digit weekend of the year, followed by Jennifer Beadle with 8 goals and 3 assists. Jessica Gaudreault tied her season high twice with 13 saves against Harvard and Bucknell.
Setting an Example
Indiana's 2018 senior group is the second graduating class in program history with four players to end their careers north of the 100-goal milestone. The other class to achieve this feat was the graduating class of 2015 (Summer Creighton, Rebecca Gerrity, Colleen McNaught, Shelby Taylor), which played out their final season during the current seniors' freshman year.
The 2018 seniors hold the program record for goals scored by a graduating class, at 599.
Top Class
The senior class invaded the Indiana record book throughout their careers. Kelly Matthews became the second player in program history (Shae Fournier, 2011-14) to enter the top-five in both career goals and assists, and she holds two of the best single-season scoring totals in program history. Last year, Matthews tied the IU school record with 7 goals in a single game.
Sarah Myers became famous for setting up her teammates and locking down the defensive end as a four-year contributor. She has the sixth-highest assist tally (136) in program history, including a career-high 46 helpers in 2016 (8th - IU history), and leads the class with 181 career steals (9th - IU history).
The home crowd also bids farewell to Jessica Gaudreault, currently one of the world's best goalkeepers and among the best to wear the Cream & Crimson. Her 916 saves and 2,047 shots faced rank second all-time in program history, and she's logged over 3,000 minutes between the pipes since 2013.
Of Note...
• The Hoosiers have scored 31 combined hat tricks from nine different players this year. Jennifer Beadle and Sarah Young the high-scoring group with 8 hat tricks and 41 goals apiece, all of which are career highs.
• Indiana is 10-1 this season when Jessica Gaudreault makes 10 or more saves in a game.
• The Hoosiers are 19-2 when holding their opponent to less than 10 goals per game.
• Indiana will also recognize junior Mackenzie Rosenthal, who completed her degree in three years, and redshirt junior Karrie Kozokar, who arrived in Bloomington the same year as the graduating class.
• The Hoosiers end the regular season with a gauntlet: five games over three days next weekend, including a pair of top-25 opponents in Harvard and Princeton on Saturday, April 7.
