San Diego, Calif. – No. 15 Indiana baseball (9-2) sealed off a series win over the No. 13 San Diego Toreros on Sunday with an 8-4 victory.
Sophomore Matt Gorski led the offensive effort with a 4-for-5 day at the plate that included three RBI. Junior Matt Lloyd needed just one swing of the bat to collect three RBI and pick up his third home run of the year. Sophomore Jeremy Houston also tagged two hits in a game that saw Indiana put up 14 hits as a unit.
Sophomore Cameron Beauchamp improved to 2-0 this season, while four Hoosiers received work from the bullpen.
Indiana fell behind 1-0 in the second frame before a big three-run inning in the third gave the Hoosiers' a lead the team wouldn't relinquish. Back-to-back single from Houston and junior Logan Kaletha set up Lloyd to go yard and put Indiana up 3-1. Lloyd's home run traveled over 452 feet, the first time since San Diego's Shane Buschini accomplished the feat in 2005.
Indiana's offense opened up for three runs in the fifth inning and gave the team a comfortable 6-1 lead. Junior Luke Miller opened with a double, while free passes to both senior Logan Sowers and junior Ryan Fineman loaded the bases. Gorski capitalized on a pitch and drove in two with an RBI double to right center field. From there, Indiana successfully pulled off a double steal, which resulted in Fineman swiping home, putting the Hoosiers up 6-1.
San Diego was able to get a run back in the sixth inning to trim Indiana's lead to 6-2. Krueger came into the game with one out and two on and forced two straight outs to strand two Toreros.
Sowers reached safely off a throwing error to open the seventh and spun it for Indiana's first of two runs in the frame. Following a throwing error, Sowers took second on a wild pitch and eventually was granted home on a balk. Gorski followed with an RBI double that plated freshman Elijah Dunham, who doubled to center field.
Trailing 8-2, the Toreros added two runs in the eighth inning
