Weaver earns No. 16 seed at 141
INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA Division I Wrestling Selection Committee announced Wednesday evening the full 33-man brackets for the upcoming NCAA Wrestling Championships. The revelation paved the path for four Hoosiers headed to Cleveland next weekend and, as expected, nobody's road is light when it comes down to the culminating weekend of the season.
Indiana redshirt junior Cole Weaver adds to an inspiring comeback season with the No. 16 seed at 141 lbs. in his first-ever NCAA qualification. Weaver's seed also drew the preliminary pigtails match, so he'll await the winner between Vincent Turk (Iowa) and Kyle Shoop (Lock Haven).
The other three NCAA qualifiers entered their brackets unseeded and, coincidentally, all three randomly drew their bracket's No. 9 seed. Junior Elijah Oliver (125) drew No. 9 Ronnie Rios-Bresser (Oregon State) for his first round pairing. Another junior, Bryce Martin (165) will make his NCAA Championships debut against 9-seed Chance Marsteller (Lock Haven). And sophomore Devin Skatzka (174) is back in the biggest tournament of the year to take on No. 9 Keaton Subjeck (Stanford) in the first round.
These pairings set up first-time encounters for Oliver, Martin, and Skatzka; Weaver faced one of his potential opponents, Iowa's Turk, at Midlands with Weaver taking an 8-3 decision.
Weaver set career highs for match wins (24) and falls (6) while leading the Hoosiers with an 11-5 dual meet record in an outstanding redemption season. After two seasons hindered by injury and falling one match shy of qualifying for the NCAA Championships last year, Weaver enters as a seeded contender in a bracket that could feature twists and turns unlike any other next weekend.
Oliver is Indiana's first three-time NCAA qualifier since Angel Escobedo (2007-10), keeping his qualifying streak alive with an eighth-place finish at last weekend's Big Ten Championships. Sharing the team lead with Skatzka at 11 bonus point wins this season, Oliver climbed over 60 career wins with an 18-13 season, going 10-5 in dual meets.
The opportunity to wrestle another big weekend in northern Ohio means everything to Martin, who missed nearly two months of this season to injury and re-entered the lineup one dual meet before the postseason. The redshirt junior collected enough weekends at the Big Ten Championships to earn one of the conference's 10 automatic bids at 165 lbs. His first round matchup, Lock Haven's Marsteller, is evidence to the argument that 165 could be the toughest weight in the nation.
Skatzka is one of two current Hoosiers, alongside Oliver, to not miss a qualifying opportunity after receiving his at-large selection on Tuesday afternoon. It also marks the fourth consecutive season that Indiana has qualified a wrestler in the 174 lbs. weight class. Skatzka led the Indiana this season with seven falls and six Big Ten dual meet wins.
The four-man bracket pairings for Indiana's wrestlers are as follows:
125 lbs. Championship
(9) Ronnie Rios-Bresser (Oregon State) vs. Elijah Oliver (Indiana)
(8) Ethan Lizak (Minnesota) vs. Barlow McGhee (Missouri)
141 lbs. Championship
(1) Bryce Meredith (Wyoming) vs. Colton Schilling (Cal Poly)
(16) Cole Weaver (Indiana) vs. Kyle Shoop (Lock Haven) / Vincent Turk (Iowa)
165 lbs. Championship
(9) Chance Marsteller (Lock Haven) vs. Bryce Martin (Indiana)
(8) Chandler Rogers (Oklahoma State) vs. Jonathan Viruet (Brown)
174 lbs. Championship
(9) Keaton Subjeck (Stanford) vs. Devin Skatzka (Indiana)
(8) Jadaen Bernstein (Navy) vs. Ty Schoffstall (Edinboro)
