SAN ANTONIO - When the 2020 Olympics commence in Tokyo, a new sport, 3-on-3 basketball will join list of traditional competitive sports taking place on the world's competitive sporting stage. With the added interest in the sport, this weekend's Final Four in San Antonio saw the Inaugural Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship join the list of ancillary activities surrounding the conclusion of the NCAA Tournament.
The 3X3U event joined the collegiate slam dunk contest, a 3-point shooting contest and the traditional senior college basketball all-star game, which annually features players who recently completed their collegiate eligibility.
With 31 conferences represented, the four graduating seniors who carried the banner for the Big Ten, Indiana's Robert Johnson, Ohio State's Jae'Sean Tate, Minnesota's Nate Mason and Purdue's Vince Edwards, finished 6-0 and earned their first professional paychecks by splitting total earnings of $55,000. The Big Ten defeated the Big West, 21-13, in the title game after defeating the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in the quarterfinals and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in the semifinals on Sunday.
The B1G also went 3-0 in pool play defeating representatives from Conference USA, the Southland Conference and the Southern Conference. Each win was worth $1,000 with the championship game winners netting 50K. The first team to 21 or whomever led after 10 minutes earned the victory. Two points were awarded for shots beyond the traditional three-point arc and one point was credited for free throws and traditional two-point baskets.
"It feels good, thank God," said Johnson who hit the Championship clinching basket with a 28-foot jumper. "Basketball in March wherever you play its's going to be tough. It didn't matter what conference we were playing, we took it serious. Every game, we tried to regroup and see what we could do better. I love these guys, that was big."
