No. 8 Hoosiers Take Opener from Buckeyes, 4-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Eighth ranked Indiana baseball (29-6, 7-2) opened up the weekend with a 4-0 shutout victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes (25-12, 6-4 Big Ten) on Friday night at Bill Davis Stadium.
Junior Jonathan Stiever was strong on the mound for the Hoosiers, as he scattered five hits in seven innings while striking out six. Senior B.J. Sabol and sophomore Cal Krueger each tossed a perfect frame in relief.
Junior Ryan Fineman and sophomore Matt Gorski led the way for the Hoosiers, each recording two hits and an RBI. Senior Logan Sowers also added two hits in the win.
Junior Logan Kaletha led off the top of third inning with a walk, advanced to second on an infield single by Gorski, and scored on a base-hit by Sowers. Fineman followed that up with an RBI single to center to give the Hoosiers a 2-0 lead.
The Hoosiers added an insurance run in the sixth inning. Fineman led off the frame with his second base-hit of the game, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Scotty Bradley and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With one out, freshman Drew Ashley drove him in on a safety squeeze to give the Hoosiers a 3-0 lead.
IU added to that in the eighth inning. Gorski led things off with a single and then scored on an infield hit and two base error by Sowers to make it a 4-0 Indiana lead.
Stiever allowed a leadoff single in the eighth and was relieved by Sabol, who shut down the three men he faced. In the ninth, Krueger retired the side in order.
Indiana and Ohio State is back in action on Saturday with a 3:05 p.m. first pitch.
Game Notes: Indiana posted its seventh shutout of the season and second in three games…The seven shutouts currently is tied for third nationally and just one behind first...The Hoosiers lowered their team ERA to 2.33, which leads the nation…Friday night was the first time Ohio State had been shutout this season…It also marked the second time that Buckeyes have been held to five hits or fewer (April 8 vs. Iowa – 4 hits)…IU is now 7-2 in road games this season…With Stiever's start, it marked the seventh straight game an IU starter has allowed one earned run or less and the 20th overall this season…Stiever now has seven consecutive quality starts (6 IP, 3 ER or less), two-straight scoreless starts and hasn't allowed a run in his last 19 innings pitched dating back to Purdue (4th inning)…As a team, the Hoosiers now have 15 quality starts this season and six in nine Big Ten games.
