BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Softball broke a 30-year program record for single-season stolen bases on the way to clinching the series against Penn State on Saturday, winning game two of the weekend, 4-1. IU stole four bases in the win, improving the season total to 95. The previous high was 91 set in 1988.
The win means the Hoosiers have now won four of their five Big Ten series as IU improves to 12-2 in conference action, maintaining second place behind Michigan.
IU saw base hits from six different Hoosiers, led by multi-hit outings for junior Sarah Galovich and sophomores Gabbi Jenkins and Katie Lacefield. Jenkins also scored a pair of runs while senior Rachel O'Malley drove in two runs.
"With this being a separation weekend, it's tight at the top," said head coach Shonda Stanton. "Every pitch, every inning and every game matters. What's fun with our group is seeing everyday who's going to take their turn and step up to have their moment."
Senior Rebecca Blitz collected a single in the first, pushing her into sole possession of second place in IU history with 226 career hits. In addition, the single extended her hitting streak to 19 games.
Junior Tara Trainer earned her second win of the weekend in the circle, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings in relief. Sophomore Emily Goodin gave the Hoosiers a solid start, going 3.0 frames with just one run on three hits.
Indiana jumped to a 1-0 lead in the second as Lacefield led off the inning with a single up the middle. Ferrari went in to pinch run and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by O'Malley before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Galovich then put the Hoosiers on the board on an RBI double to right center.
The Nittany Lions answered right back to tie the game at 1-1 as Kennedy Legg knocked a solo homer to right in the top of the third.
IU regained the lead in the home half of the inning as Jenkins started a two-out rally with a single to third. After stealing second, she was brought in as Lacefield singled back up the middle.
Tara Trainer entered the game to start the fourth and struck out five on the way to the win.
Indiana added some run support in the fifth, sparked by singles from Jenkins and freshman Maddie Westmoreland. After both stole a base, the Hoosiers had two in scoring position for O'Malley, who singled through the right side to plate both runners.
"It was nice to take the lead early with Galovich and then battle back after they tied it," said Stanton. "Then O'Malley stepped up with the two-outs, two-RBI swing up the middle to plate the insurance that we needed. For us, it's been a different athlete every game stepping up to win the ballgame. Between being aggressive at the plate and then seeing someone like Makayla Ferrari be big for us on the basepaths to take advantage of the next 60 feet."
Indiana and Penn State will close out the series Sunday at Noon. Admission to all home games is free of charge.
