COLUMBUS, Ohio – Indiana baseball (29-8, 7-4) fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes in extra innings by a score of 6-5. It marked the second-straight one-run loss for the Hoosiers, who dropped the weekend series, 2-1.
Junior Ryan Fineman led the way offensively for the Hoosiers, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Juniors Logan Kaletha and Matt Lloyd each had two hits and two runs scored, while sophomore Matt Gorski went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Junior lefty Tim Herrin started on the mound for the Hoosiers, allowing two earned runs over 4.1 innings. Sophomore Cal Krueger added 3.2 innings of one-run ball in relief, while Lloyd and senior B.J. Sabol each had scoreless frames.
Gorski led off the second with a walk and stole second with no outs. Freshman Elijah Dunham hit a ball to deep left field that was caught but allowed Gorski to advance to third. From there, sophomore Jeremy Houston drove Gorski in on an RBI groundout to second.
Ohio State answered with a two-run bottom half. After Tyler Cowles knocked a one-out triple off the left field wall, Brady Cherry followed with a two-run home run in the same direction to give the Buckeyes a 2-1 lead.
Kalehta led off the third frame with a single and moved to second on a fielder's choice from Lloyd's at-bat to give the Hoosiers' runners on first and second. Then with one out, Fineman roped his second double of the game to the left centerfield gap. Kaletha scored on the play, but Lloyd was thrown out at home, resulting in a tie game after three.
The Hoosiers retook the lead in the top of the fifth. With one out, Kaletha doubled down the left field line and Lloyd walked to give IU runners on first and second. With two outs after Fineman walked to load the bases, Kaletha scored on a wild pitch. Gorski followed with an infield RBI single to make it 4-2 Indiana.
The Buckeyes would rally again though in the bottom of the fifth. The first two hitters reached on an error and walk, which would result in a safety squeeze and an RBI single to make 4-4.
In the top of the seventh, Indiana had a runner, Lloyd, on third with two outs. Bradley came through and laced a base-hit down the left field line to make it a 5-4 Hoosier lead.
The scrappy Buckeyes got the first two runners on in the eighth on a base-hit and walk. A sacrifice fly later in the frame tied the game up at five, eventually forcing extra innings.
With a runner on first on two outs in the bottom of the 12th, Ohio State's Noah McGowan hit a walk-off RBI double to make it a 6-5 final.
Indiana heads to Purdue on Wednesday for a non-conference game with the Boilermakers at 7 p.m. on ESPNU. The Hoosiers will return to Bart Kaufman Field next weekend for a three-game set with Illinois.
Game Notes: The two doubles by Fineman were a career-high for him…Gorski stole his 17th base of the season, which ranks tied for second in the Big Ten…This marked Indiana's third extra-inning game this year, falling to 2-1 in those contests…This was IU's shortest extra-inning affair of the season (14 vs. Ball State, 13 vs. Purdue).
