BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 46 Indiana men's tennis team (14-11) finished its regular season with a 4-0 sweep over No. 49 Penn State on Sunday afternoon at the IU Varsity Courts. After the match, seniors Raheel Manji and Keivon Tabrizi were recognized for their contributions to the program.
Since March 30, the Hoosiers have grabbed six of their last eight matches.
In doubles, the Hoosiers dropped the first match 6-1 while at the same time trailing at the second and third spots. At two, Manji and sophomore Zac Brodney came back from down 5-4 to win 7-5.
In the deciding match with juniors Afonso Salgado and Antonio Cembellin, the pair forced a tiebreaker after trailing in the set. In the tiebreak, the resilient duo fell behind 3-0 and then turned it on for seven straight points, giving IU the extra point.
The doubles success carried over into singles for the Hoosiers as they took the first set at all but one position. At the four and six spots, sophomore Bennett Crane and freshman Andrew Redding cruised to wins, 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-4.
After a 6-4 first set win for Brodney at the five spot, his second set did not come as easy. Brodney's opponent forced a tiebreak and rallied after falling down 2-0 in the tiebreak. With a few points, Brodney grabbed control of the tiebreak and soared to a 7-4 win to clinch the match for himself and IU.
Up next, the Hoosiers begin their postseason when they travel to Iowa City for the Big Ten Championships beginning on Thursday, April 26 and running until Sunday, April 29.
