WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Indiana baseball (29-9) dropped a midweek, non-conference contest to the Purdue Boilermakers on Wednesday night, 5-3.
Sophomore Matt Gorski was 2-for-4 in the loss with an inside the park home run. Junior Matt Lloyd also put together a 2-or-4 effort with an RBI and junior Ryan Fineman added two hits as well.
Purdue pieced together a two out-run in the first inning, as Nick Evarts hit an RBI single to right. Indiana answered back though in the top of the second. Fineman ripped a double down the left field line to start things off, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an infield RBI single by Lloyd to make it 1-1.
After the Boilermakers took a 2-1 lead in the third, the Hoosiers answered in the fourth on Gorski's inside the park home run. Gorski laced a line drive to center, where the centerfielder made a diving attempt at it but the ball got past and rolled to the warning track. Gorski's speed allowed him to touch all four bases.
A feisty Purdue team came back strong in the bottom half of the inning though. A single, walk, and bunt single loaded the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly by Harry Shipley and a fielder's choice in Nick Dalesandro's at-bat made it a 4-2 game.
In the top of the sixth, the Hoosiers loaded the bases with no outs for Lloyd, who ripped a line drive that was snagged by the second baseman, who then doubled up Fineman on the play. Indiana made the most out of what they had though, as Gorski and senior Logan Sowers successfully executed a double steal, allowing Sowers to score to trim the lead to 4-3.
Again though, three-straight hitters getting on to lead off the bottom of the sixth resulted in a run, to make it 5-3.
Indiana hosts Illinois in a three-game series this weekend, with the first game coming on Friday night at 6:05 p.m. from Bart Kaufman Field.
