Matthews becomes four-time conference honoree
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – The Collegiate Water Polo Association announced Thursday their selections to the All-CWPA teams, as chosen by the conference coaches. Indiana placed three seniors—goalkeeper Jessica Gaudreault, attacker Sarah Myers, and defender Kelly Matthews—on the All-CWPA teams with Gaudreault and Myers earning first team honors.
The selections give head coach Ryan Castle five all-conference awards from four different athletes in his first two seasons at Indiana. The three IU honorees ranks second in the conference, one behind CWPA regular season champion Princeton.
Matthews claims the fourth All-CWPA honor of her career, becoming the third four-time CWPA honoree in program history and the first since Shae Fournier (2011-14). Matthews received first team honors in 2016 and 2017, earned second team plaudits in 2015 and 2018, and won the 2015 CWPA Rookie of the Year award.
Gaudreault is now a three-time selection to the All-CWPA first team, a first for an Indiana goalkeeper, and the first three-time conference honoree since Jessica Goldner (2002-05). Myers collects her first career conference honors and becomes the 19th player in program history to earn first team recognition from the CWPA.
Matthews amassed 40 goals this regular season while leading the Hoosiers with 39 assists and 57 steals. The Roxboro, Quebec native posted five hat tricks in 2018 and 12 games with at least two goals. As it stands today, Matthews is the only player in program history with top-three career totals for goals (247 – 2nd IU history) and assists (147 – 3rd IU history).
In four seasons between the pipes, Gaudreault hasn't wavered. This senior season might be her best yet, as she set a personal record for season saves (268 – 6th IU history) while tying a career high with 13 double-digit save performances. The Hoosiers went 11-2 in games where Gaudreault earned 10 saves or more. The Canadian international ranks second all-time for total saves (965) and shots faced (2,117).
That Myers picked up first team accolades in her final season is a testament to her outstanding, consistent play throughout her career. She scored 21 goals this year and trails only Matthews in the assists category with 38. Myers forced multiple steals in nearly half of Indiana's regular season games and grabbed 48 swipes in total. With 185 steals in her career (9th – IU history), Myers is the first player to crack the top-10 steals leaderboard since Shae Fournier (2011-14) and ranks fifth in program history with 142 career assists.
