BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana men's tennis team (10-10) knocked off their first ranked team of the season with a 4-3 win against No. 31 Minnesota on Friday night inside the IU Tennis Center.
The Hoosiers kicked it off with the doubles point win and followed with victories at the bottom three spots of singles.
Moments after falling behind on the doubles scoreboard with a loss at No. 2, the top court of sophomore Bennett Crane and senior Keivon Tabrizi won 6-3 to even things up.
With the extra point coming down to the third spot, senior Raheel Manji and sophomore Zac Brodney were locked in a 5-5 tie. After a narrow win to pull ahead 6-5, the duo came through after a long rally on match point to win 7-5 and gave IU the doubles point.
In singles, the Gophers grabbed the first two matches with wins at the first and second spot.
The 12th singles victory of the season for Brodney came with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 to push the match back to a tie.
Indiana pulled ahead 3-2 when Crane locked up his match win in a second set tiebreaker in which he won 7-1.
Needing to win one of the two remaining matches, the Hoosiers turned to Tabrizi and freshman Andrew Redding. At the three spot, Tabrizi faced a No. 95 opponent and pushed the second set to a tiebreaker as he tried to send it to a third set. Back-and-forth the tiebreak went but the Gophers tied up the match when the tiebreaker went their way 10-8.
As the three spot was being decided, the six spot with Redding was in a third set. At 4-4, Redding broke Vlad Lobak's serve and got the opportunity to serve for a Hoosiers victory. After Redding found himself down 0-40, he stormed back to tie the game and on match point sent a winner past Lobak to give IU its upset win.
The Hoosiers jump right back into action on Sunday when No. 46 Wisconsin comes to the IU Tennis Center for a match beginning at 12 p.m. For fans in attendance, tennis magnets will be available.
