Hoosiers Celebrate WNIT Championship, 2017-18 Season On Sunday Afternoon

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Basketball along with friends, family and fans came together to celebrate the 2017-18 season on Sunday afternoon inside Henke Hall of Champions.
Senior Associate Athletic Director and former women's basketball broadcaster Jeremy Gray acted as emcee of the event, that recognized the accomplishments of the program this season which was highlighted by its first WNIT Championship.
The Hoosiers also celebrated the storied careers of two of the greatest players in program history in Tyra Buss and Amanda Cahill, who leave Indiana as the all-time winningest senior class (82 games). Buss repeated as a WBCA All-American Honorable Mention, First Team All-Big Ten and Senior CLASS Award finalist as she set eight school records, most notably tearing apart the school's scoring record by scoring 2,364 points. Cahill became the program's second back-to-back CoSIDA Academic All-American, Second Team All-Big Ten selection as she scored over 1,800 points and grabbed 1,100 rebounds as she registers in the top five of six different program career categories.
Freshman Jaelynn Penn was also recognized by becoming the first IU freshman to earn a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman team. The team will now turn its focus on academics for the remainder of the semester before resuming summer workouts in June.
A Year to Celebrate
Indiana's run in the WNIT was a historic feat for the program, who will hang a banner in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall by defeating Virginia Tech at home, 65-57, on March 31. They tied a program-record 23 wins for the second-straight season, finishing 23-14 overall and 9-7 in Big Ten play. Statistically, IU once again set program marks in points scored (2,595) and finished tied for second in field goals made (934) and 3-point field goals made (240). They also finished third in 3-point field goals attempted (688) and in blocks (934).
Key wins included three wins over foe Purdue including a third round WNIT victory at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, where Indiana went 16-5 overall and hold an 11-game win streak. Another memorable performance of the season came in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament where Indiana defeated Michigan State in four overtimes, 111-109, in the longest tournament game in men's or women's history and the longest game in Bankers Life Fieldhouse history.
Indiana's run to the postseason WNIT championship was highlighted by winning 15 of its last 17 games of the season. They defeated UT Martin, Milwaukee, Purdue, UC Davis, TCU and Virginia Tech on its way to the tournament title. Thanks to enormous fan support, the Hoosiers shattered the all-time single game attendance record in the championship game as 13,007 fans witnessed Indiana cut down the nets to close out the season.
