Hoosiers Host Big Ten Outdoor Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University track and field will open their postseason competition this weekend when they host the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on Friday, May 11 through Sunday, May 13. Indiana last hosted the Championships in 2010.
The Hoosiers head into the weekend with the goal to improve their team performances from last year. The men tied-for-eighth with Michigan and the women finished eighth. There will be a total of 45 athletes wearing candy stripes on the track and in the field with 31 of them having a top-10 ranking, which includes four relays.
In the field, junior Nycia Ford will get the Hoosiers started on Friday in the women's hammer throw at 12:00 pm ET. Ford enters the weekend with the fourth best mark in the Big Ten after setting a big personal record of 63.30m (207' 8") at the Billy Hayes Invitational last weekend. She will look to improve on last years 12th place finish. Redshirt freshman Princess Brinkley will make her career debut in a Big Ten Outdoor Championship. On the men's side redshirt senior Andrew Miller will try and improve his eighth place finish from last year.
Sophomore Jenna Jungels is scheduled to compete in the heptathlon, which will include four events on Friday and three events on Saturday. Jungels' first event on Friday will be the 100m hurdles at 12:15 pm ET followed by the high jump and shot put and she'll close the day with the 200m dash. Saturday she will start with the long jump at 11:15 am ET then move on to the javelin and finish with the 800m run.
On the track there will be six trail events including the men's and women's 400m hurdles, 200m and 1,500m. In the hurdles, sophomore William Session enters the weekend ranked tenth in the Big Ten with the season-best time of 52.29 at the Tennessee Relays. On the women's side junior Jeyland Valentin will attempt to improve on her 2017 12th place finish.
Redshirt junior Joe Murphy finished second in the 1,500m last year and enters the weekend with the second fastest time in the Big Ten behind Oliver Hoare of Wisconsin. Murphy will be joined by redshirt freshman Teddy Browning who currently has the seventh fastest time in the Big Ten. On the women's side junior Kelsey Harris will aim to improve on her 12th place finish as she comes into the week ranked ninth in the Big Ten. Teammates Hannah Stoffel and Brenna Calder will join Harris on the track. The women's race is scheduled to start at 6:45 pm ET and the men's to follow at 7:05 pm ET.
The final events of day one will be the men's and women's 10,000m run featuring four Hoosiers. Junior Maggie Allen hopes to improve on her third place finish from last year and will be joined by teammate Katherine Receveur. On the men's side redshirt sophomore Bryce Millar enters the weekend ranked fifth in the Big Ten and looks to improve on his fourth place performance from last year. Redshirt freshman Ben Veatch will join Millar on the track.
Following the completion of Jenna Jungels in the heptathlon day two will start with the men's and women's long jump at 1:20 pm ET where two Hoosiers enter the weekend ranked top-10. On the men's side junior Treyton Harris will aim to improve his 2017 sixth place finish and sixth place Big Ten Indoor Championships finish. He currently has the fifth best mark in the Big Ten and will be joined by junior Eric Bethea. On the women's side indoor bronze medalist, Aaliyah Armstead enters the weekend with the sixth best mark in the Big Ten and will compete along side teammates Jenna Jungels and Leah Moran.
One of the main field events to watch of the weekend will be the men's and women's shot put where All-American Willie Morrison and sophomore Khayla Dawson are expected to have strong performances. Morrison broke the school record, which he previously held, by an entire foot at the Penn Relays last month with the mark of 19.98m (65' 6.5"). He brought home the bronze last year and comes into the weekend with the third best mark in the Big Ten. Dawson currently has the fourth best mark in school history and enters the weekend with the best mark in the Big Ten from her lifetime best performance of 16.94m (55' 7") at the Tennessee Relays.
Day two on the track will feature eight trail races including the men's and women's 400m, 800m, the women's 100m, the women's 100m hurdles and the men's 110m hurdles. In the hurdles both sophomore William Session and freshman Zykeria Williams are ranked in the top-10. Williams comes in with the eighth best mark in the Big Ten and will make her Big Ten Outdoor Championship debut at 5:10 pm ET. Session enters the weekend with the fourth fastest 110m hurdle time and hopes to improve on his 2017 seventh place finish.
The men's and women's 800m trials will be a must watch race. On the women's side senior Kendell Wiles enters the weekend with the third fastest time in the Big Ten after taking two seconds off of her personal record at the Florida Relays (2:05.44). She'll be joined by teammates Kelsey Harris, Joely Pinkston and Mallory Mulzer. Harris finished second at the indoor championships, ninth last year and comes into the weekend with the sixth fastest time of the weekend. Pinkston took fourth at the indoor championships and currently has the eighth fastest time in the Big Ten.
On the men's side three Hoosiers are scheduled to run and all three are ranked in the top-5 in the Big Ten. Senior Daniel Kuhn comes into the weekend with the second fastest time in the Big Ten from his performance at the Cardinal Classic (1:48.14). Entering the weekend right behind Kuhn is redshirt sophomore Cooper Williams coming in with the third best time in the Big Ten from his 1:48.37 performance at the Tennessee Relays. Redshirt senior Jordan Huntoon will round out the pack for the Hoosiers coming into the weekend with the fifth fastest time in the Big Ten from the Florida Relays (1:49.60).
Four Hoosiers will close day two out in the men's and women's 3,000m steeplechase. The women's race is scheduled to start at 6:40 pm ET and will feature junior Haley Harris, redshirt freshman Lexa Barrott and redshirt freshman Hannah Stoffel. Harris finished eighth last year and comes into the weekend with the sixth best time in the Big Ten and Barrott has the eighth best time. On the men's side redshirt junior Joe Murphy will try and improve on his third place finish from last year.
Day three in the field will feature sophomore Leah Moran and junior Eric Bethea in the triple jump starting at 11:00 am EST. Moran enters the weekend with the third best mark in the Big Ten and Bethea has the second best mark.
Sophomore Adam Coulon will defend and try to improve on his indoor silver medal in the pole vault. Coulon comes in with the third best mark in the Big Ten. He'll be joined by teammates Brock Mammoser and Alex Shinnerl. Men's pole vault is scheduled to start at 12:00 pm ET.
