ANN ARBOR, Mich. – USRowing recently announced its initial roster of athletes that will represent the United States in Shanghai, China at the 2018 World University Rowing Championships and Indiana's Emily Wasz was one of 12 athletes named to the women's team.
"I fell in love with this sport four years ago," said Wasz. "To be able to continue my rowing career beyond college is incredible. And to be able to wear the red, white and blue on top of that is an absolute honor. I would have never imagined that this journey would take me to Shanghai, China, but I have an amazing coaching staff and set of teammates to thank for helping me get this far."
The championship will take place Aug. 10-12 in China, but the USRowing team will train in Ypsilanti, Michigan at the end of the college season leading up to the event. The women's team will be coached by Kemp Savage, the head coach at Eastern Michigan University.
"I am very proud of Emily and what she has accomplished," Indiana head coach Steve Peterson said. "She came to IU rowing without any rowing experience and now, four years later, she is racing for the U.S. team. It is a testament to the hard work and commitment she has put in over the last four years and we wish her and USRowing nothing but the best in China."
Wasz, a native of Clarendon Hills, Illinois, graduated this past weekend with her degree in Public Relations and Advertising and will lead the Hoosiers into the Big Ten Championships this weekend at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis looking to earn the fifth straight appearance in the NCAA Championships.
