Hoosier Win Four Medals on Day One of Big Ten Outdoor Championships
5/11/2018 11:30:00 PM | Track and Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University track and field opened the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Bloomington Friday afternoon. The Hoosiers finished the day with the women's team in third place with a total of 22 points after four events and the men's team in sixth place with ten points after three events.
After just missing a medal last year Nycia Ford came to the Championships determined to take home a medal, which is exactly what she did. The junior crushed her personal record when she launched the hammer 64.19m (210' 7") on her final attempt of the afternoon, which brought home silver. Ford has improved over 15-feet since her first meet of the 2018 outdoor season when she set her first personal record of 59.58m (195' 5") at the Pac 12/Big Ten Challenge.
Quote from Ford:
"I just kept going. My coach keeps telling me 'be aggressive, be aggressive' and that's exactly what I did. I just did exactly what he [Coach Martin] told me to do. Even when I feel like my technique isn't lining up how I want it to as long as I remain aggressive like my coach keeps telling me, something always comes out of it. He's very encouraging in-between [throws]. He knows how to communicate with me as an athlete. He keeps it simple because he knows once he starts trying to pin-point little things here and there then I start to overthink. He just tells me simply, stay aggressive."
On the men's side, All-American Andrew Miller had his best hammer mark since 2015 and improved on it by two-feet. The redshirt senior set his personal record of 64.66m (212' 2") on his third attempt of the evening, which earned him a seventh place finish. Miller's mark puts him third on the All-Time Hoosiers list in the record books behind Adam Judge (68.09m / 223' 5") and Wil Fleming (66.57m / 218' 5").
On the track six Hoosiers qualified for the 1500m finals on Sunday. For the men redshirt junior Joe Murphy and redshirt freshman Teddy Browning went one-two in the first heat automatically earning a spot in the finals. Murphy crossed the finish line in 3:47.73 with Browning right behind him at 3:47.92. For the women junior Kelsey Harris was the first to advance when she took third in the second heat with the time of 4:25.67, which is an automatic qualification. Senior Brenna Calder also automatically qualified for finals when she finished second in the third heat with the time of 4:22.33.
