Hoosiers Defeat Cornhuskers, 8-6, to Win Series

LINCOLN, Neb. – Indiana baseball (33-15, 11-9) scored eight runs in the first five innings to defeat the Nebraska Cornhuskers by a score of 8-6 on Sunday afternoon to win the series.
Indiana's offense had 13 hits on the day, led by a 3-for-5 effort from senior Logan Sowers, who drove in two runs and homered. Sophomore Jeremy Houston went 2-for-4 in the win with three
RBI and a triple. Junior Matt Lloyd and freshman Drew Ashley each had two hits and an RBI.
On the mound, the Hoosiers got a nice outing from junior Tim Herrin, who allowed five hits and one run over five innings. Senior B.J. Sabol tossed a scoreless eighth and Lloyd earned his fifth save of the year.
After Sowers led off the second with a double to left centerfield followed by two outs, sophomore Scotty Bradley worked a two-out walk to set things up for Houston. The sophomore ripped a two-run triple to the opposite field to give IU the 2-0 lead.
In the top of the third, the Hoosiers got back-to-back singles from Lloyd and Gorski to lead off the frame. Sowers laced a single to center that plated Lloyd, which was then followed by squeeze play successfully executed by Ashley to make it a 4-0 game.
Indiana went on to up that lead to 6-0 with another two-run frame in the fourth. Bradley led off with a walk, advanced to second with one out on Kaletha's single, and then scored on an RBI double down the right field line by Lloyd. Gorski finished things off with a sac fly to right.
The Hoosiers put together a fourth-straight two-run inning in the fifth. Sowers knocked out his seventh home run of the season on an 0-1 count with no outs. Singles by junior Luke Miller and
Bradley set up an RBI single for Houston to extend IU's lead to eight runs.
Nebraska got its scoring started in the bottom of the fifth with one run, and would score two in each of the next two innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Mojo Hagge and Scott Schreiber each got RBIs, while Angelo Altavilla was credited with a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to make it an 8-5 game.
The Cornhuskers threatened in the ninth. With two outs, Schreiber blooped a single to left center to score a run and set things up for Jesse Wilkening. Wilkening just missed a home run as Sowers made the catch in right to end the game.
Indiana will travel to Louisville on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
