INDIANAPOLIS – On Sunday at the Big Ten Championships, the Indiana rowing team had steady performances throughout the lineup with a number of crews out-performing their seed entering the championship. In the end, the Hoosiers took home fifth place as a team with the Second Varsity Four leading the way with a third place showing.
Also announced following the regatta were the All-Big Ten teams and Indiana was represented by Antonia Frappell on the first team and Hilary Shinnick on the second team. Connie Brahm was the team's Sportsmanship honoree.
The First Varsity Eight battled their way to a fifth place finish in the final race of the day with a time of 6:30.742, just two seconds behind Wisconsin in fourth place.
The Hoosiers' Second Varsity Eight also finished fifth in their race with a time of 6:35.841 after they closed strong near the finish line.
And the third NCAA boat, the First Varsity Four, also took fifth place honors with a time of 7:29.402, less than a second behind Wisconsin in fourth place.
The best result of the day for IU came from the Second Varsity Four, who entered their race seeded sixth but showed the field they were far better than that. Right from the start, the Hoosiers got out quick and were in contention at the front. As they came down the stretch, they continued to row together and their time of 7:30.631 put them on the podium in third place.
The Third Varsity Four also out-performed their seed, entering the race as the sixth seed but crossing the line in 7:57.865 to take fourth place.
Both novice crews were not able to find their rhythm and finished eighth in their races. The First Novice Eight posted a time of 7:27.519 while the Second Novice Eight finished in 7:47.649.
The Hoosiers will now tune in to the NCAA Selection Show on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. to see whether they have earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Championship for a fifth straight year.
