BRYAN, Texas – Indiana redshirt junior Jake Brown made his NCAA postseason debut on Monday and posted an even par round of 72 to tie for 19th place after the first round of the NCAA Bryan Regional at Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
After a rocky start to the day with his irons, he was able to use his short game to escape the early holes at even par and then found the groove with his irons but was never able to get the putter rolling. He finished the day hitting 14-of-18 greens in regulation and had numerous chances at birdie.
"I thought my tee-to-green play today was just about as good as I have been all year," Brown said. "I had a ton of chances to make some putts but they just wouldn't drop. Overall, it was good to get the first round out of the way and hopefully I will find a way to make some more putts tomorrow."
Brown began his day with four consecutive pars, but not all of them were routine. On the first hole, after a drive in the fairway, his approach shot missed the green to the left but he was able to chip it close and made the 6-foot par put. On the second hole, a 216-yard par 3, Brown missed the green to the right but his chip back onto the green was excellent and he tapped in for par.
The third hole marked the third straight that Brown missed the green in regulation, but he was able to once again chip it close and make par. He would be tested on the fourth green, where his first putt came up 8-feet short but he rolled the par putt in to go to the par 5 fifth hole at even par.
He was able to take advantage of the 539-yard par 5 fifth hole by hitting a superb wedge into the green for his third shot and making the 7-foot birdie putt. The next hole, Brown once again set himself up with a good look at birdie from 15-feet away but the putt slid just by the right edge and he finished up for par.
The par 3 seventh hole, playing at 192-yards in round one, saw Brown hit a stellar tee shot pin high 12-feet to the right of the flag. But he played too much break in the putt and he had another par.
He closed the front nine with two more pars on holes eight and nine and then made par on the 10th and 11th holes. His only hiccup in the round came off the tee on the par 4 12th hole, where he hit his tee shot out of bounds. He hit a dazzling approach shot to the front of the green with a front pin placement but the put curled to the right and he had to settle for bogey – his only one of the day.
Over the final six holes, Brown used the combination of his steady driving ability and excellent iron play to par each hole and finish at even par.
The second round will begin at 9:20 a.m. CT (11:04 a.m. ET) with the Brown going off the first tee. Follow hole-by-hole live scoring on GolfStat.com.
At the conclusion of three rounds, the top five teams and the top individual not on those five qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championship Finals at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Oklahoma on May 25-27.
