Three Hoosiers Named NFCA All-Region

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Softball saw three selected for NFCA All-Midwest Region squads on Thursday with junior Tara Trainer earning First Team accolades and sophomore Gabbi Jenkins and freshman Maddie Westmoreland being named to the Third Team.
The awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association's 10 regions with first, second and third-team selections. NFCA member coaches from each respective region voted on the teams, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to the 2018 NFCA Division I All-American squads.
Trainer, who last week was named First Team All-Big Ten and to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team, posted a 2.64 ERA this season in 198.2 innings pitched. The Lebanon, Ohio native collected a career-best 216 strikeouts, the eighth most in a single season in Indiana history. Trainer's 572 career strikeouts sit at fourth all-time in the Hoosier record books, while her 42 career wins is tied for fourth all-time. Trainer was named to the All-Tournament Team after a two-hit complete game victory in Indiana's 2-1 win against Illinois in the Quarterfinals. The junior also earned All-Region accolades last season as she was named to the Third Team. This year's First Team honor is the first for a Hoosier since 2011.
Jenkins earns her first All-Region honor as she led the Hoosiers with a .369 average, 66 hits and 39 runs scored. The Floyds Knobs, Ind. native also had 26 stolen bases and 17 walks on the year. Jenkins, who was named Second Team All-Big Ten last week, posted six triples this season, tied for 10th most in the nation.
Glendale, Ariz. native Westmoreland is coming off an impressive freshman season that saw her earn First Team All-Big Ten honors and two Big Ten Player and Freshman of the Week accolades. Westmorland hit .306 and led the team with 52 RBI and 10 home runs. Her 52 RBI are the second-most in a single season in Indiana program history.
The Hoosiers wrapped up the 2018 campaign last weekend as they advanced to the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals for the first time since 2006.
