Hoosiers to play eight in Bloomington next fall
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana field hockey head coach Amanda Janney revealed the Hoosiers' 2018 fall schedule on Wednesday. The 16-game campaign includes eight contests in the friendly confines of the IU Field Hockey Complex; seven games will pit the Hoosiers against returning NCAA Championship qualifiers.
The IU field hockey season officially begins on Tuesday, August 7 with the opening day of preseason. Their preseason slate includes a trip to Saint Louis (8/14) for their first scrimmage, followed by a home weekend with the Cream & Crimson Scrimmage (8/17) and the preseason finale against Ball State (8/18).
Indiana begins their year with games against their biggest—and closest—rivals, and both games take place in the Hoosier State. The Hoosiers' official home opener reignites the "Battle of the Border" with Louisville at 3 p.m. ET on Friday, August 24. That Sunday, August 26, the Hoosiers head up to Muncie to take on the Cardinals at 2 p.m. ET.
The first road trip of the year takes several Hoosiers close to their hometowns as they play two games in Philadelphia on Labor Day weekend. Indiana meets Villanova (8/31) for the second year running before traveling 15 across town to take on Drexel (9/2).
For the first time in Janney's tenure at Indiana, the Hoosiers will host a regular season invitational weekend with five teams playing four games at the IU Field Hockey Complex. Indiana meets Stanford (9/7), the reigning America East champion, at 3 p.m. ET before hosting Saint Francis (9/9) at 2:30 p.m. Stanford will play games against Ohio (9/6) and Central Michigan (9/9) in Bloomington that weekend as well.
A weekend split between home and the road follows as the Hoosiers open their Big Ten schedule in the middle of September. Indiana gains home turf advantage for their conference opener, against Northwestern (9/14), set for a 3 p.m. ET start on Friday. After that, Indiana heads west to reprise a series of exciting games against Iowa (9/16) in Iowa City at 1 p.m. ET (12 p.m. CT).
That game against the Hawkeyes kicks off a four-game stretch away from home for Indiana. They head to Oxford, Ohio as they set to face Miami University (9/23) at 2:00 p.m. ET in a single-game weekend. The next week, they'll be back in the Buckeye State to meet Ohio State (9/28) at 4:00 p.m. ET. After the Buckeyes, Indiana will continue north for a battle with the Wolverines (9/30) at 1 p.m. ET.
The 2018 home slate concludes with four consecutive games over two weekends in Bloomington. On Friday, October 5, Indiana will host Michigan State at 3 p.m. ET. The Hoosiers follow that with their last non-conference game of the regular season, against Saint Louis, at noon on Sunday, October 7.
Homecoming weekend brings a pair of tough conference foes to the home turf. Indiana begins the slate against Maryland, last year's NCAA runner-up, at 3 p.m. ET on Friday, October 12.
Following that, Indiana will celebrate their senior class as they play their final career home game on Sunday, October 14 against Rutgers. The game is set for a noon start, but prior to that the Hoosiers will recognize their three-woman senior class: Nora Aucker, Taylor Swope, and Claire Woods.
The regular season comes to a close, as it did the last two seasons, with a game against Penn State on Friday, October 19. The 6 p.m. ET start will be under the lights in State College, Pennsylvania.
The Postseason
The Big Ten conference saw the excitement of last year's newly-formatted tournament and kept the model for the 2018 season, meaning that the higher seed will host games on their campus until the Big Ten field narrows to four teams. The first round will run from Friday, October 26 to Sunday, October 28 before convening at Northwestern University the following weekend. The Wildcats will host the semifinal games at Lakeside Field on Friday, November 2 and the Big Ten title game on Sunday, November 4.
For the second year running, the NCAA tournament will culminate at Trager Field on the campus of the University of Louisville from Friday, November 16 to Sunday, November 18. That weekend will also hold the NFHCA Senior All-Star game on Saturday, November 17.
