MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Indiana baseball (31-11, 9-6) was limited to just four hits in a 4-1 loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Friday night.
Junior right hander Jonathan Stiever scattered seven hits and four runs over 6.2 innings, striking out four and walking four, as his streak of eight-straight quality starts came to an end. Sophomore Andrew Saalfrank tossed an inning and a third of scoreless relief. Offensively, sophomore Matt Gorski had two hits in the loss.
The Golden Gophers worked a leadoff walk in the top of the first, which led to a one-out double by Terrin Vavra to put runners on second and third. An RBI groundout by Eli Wilson put up the early run.
Lloyd tied things up in the top of the fourth with his seventh home run of the season.
A tough Minnesota offense would answer though in the bottom of the fifth. Alex Boxwell led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. An RBI double by Ben Mezzenga and an RBI single by Vavra gave the Gophers a 3-1 advantage.
Minnesota tacked on a fourth run in the seventh to increase the lead to three runs. Bowell singled, advanced on a sac bunt, stole third with two outs and then scored on RBI single by Wilson.
Indiana threatened in the top of the ninth as junior Logan Kaletha and Lloyd each worked walks to lead things off. Then with one out, junior Ryan Fineman was hit with a pitch to load the bases. But a strikeout and groundout ended the threat, resulting in a 4-1 Minnesota victory.
The Hoosiers and Golden Gophers face off on Saturday at 3 p.m.ET on BTN.
