Hoosiers Suffer Tough One-Run Loss to No. 17 Kentucky, 7-6

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Nineteenth-ranked Indiana baseball (31-14) dropped a midweek contest to No. 17 Kentucky by a score of 7-6 on Tuesday evening.

The Hoosiers out-hit Kentucky 12-11 in the contest, and got multi-hit efforts from sophomore Matt Gorski, junior Ryan Fineman, senior Logan Sowers, freshman Drew Ashley and sophomore Jeremy Houston. Indiana had two home runs from Fineman and Ashley in the loss.

On the mound, sophomore Andrew Saalfrank started and allowed three hits over three innings. Freshman Tommy Sommer was strong in relief, as he allowed two hits and no runs in 2.2 innings.

Kentucky got the first two guys on in the top of the first to set up a two-out double by Luke Heyer to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead. The Wildcats would add on to that lead with a three-run fourth that started with a pair of walks. A sac-fly, double and RBI single by UK made it a 4-0 game.

Indiana answered in the bottom half with a two-spot. Sowers hit a one-out single and Miller followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Ashely then hit a sacrifice fly to right, which was followed by an infield single by Houston. Good base running by Miller allowed him to score on the play to make it 4-2 in favor of UK.

The Wildcats came back with two in the fifth on a Luke Heyer two-run home run.

In the bottom of the fifth, IU stormed back with junior Matt Lloyd leading things off with a walk and advancing to second on a wild pitch. Following a Gorski RBI single up the middle, Fineman tagged a two-run home run to cap off the three-run frame and to cut the game to one run.

Tristan Pompey hit a solo home run for Kentucky with one out in the top of the ninth to make it a 7-5 game.

With one out in the bottom half, Ashely connected on his second home run of the year, but that was not enough as UK's closer Chris Machamer forced two-straight strikeouts to end the game.

Indiana travels to Nebraska this weekend. Friday's opener is slated for a 7:35 p.m. first pitch.
