BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer announced the 2018 schedule on Tuesday, highlighted by nine regular season games to be played at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers will face off against six 2017 NCAA Tournament teams and 12 that finished in the top-100 of the final NCAA RPI, including seven that were in the top-50.
"We are really looking forward to this year's schedule," said head coach Amy Berbary. "Our non-conference slate allows us to play eight teams from five different conferences that will challenge us on styles of play and level of competition. These games will prepare us for Big Ten play, which is always a battle."
Indiana will host Ohio State in its lone exhibition on Aug. 9 at Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers will not meet the Buckeyes in the regular season this year.
IU will officially open the 2018 campaign on Aug. 17 by hosting its annual Hoosier Challenge Cup. Indiana will play Wake Forest on Friday night for the first ever meeting between the two programs. The Demon Deacons advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round last year. The Hoosiers will conclude the weekend against Miami (Ohio) on Sunday afternoon. Indiana leads the all-time series against the Red Hawks, 2-0, with the last meeting coming in 2003.
The following weekend will see the Hoosiers travel south to face Berbary's alma mater in Georgia, as well as a trip to Clemson. The Bulldogs and Hoosiers will meet for the first time in program history, while the game against the Tigers is a rematch from last year's contest in Bloomington. Clemson defeated Indiana, 1-0, in the Hoosier Classic, as the Tigers went on to finish 32nd in the final RPI and advance to the NCAA Tournament Second Round.
Indiana's four-game road-swing will continue the following weekend as the Hoosiers head to California to play a pair of West Coast Conference teams in Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount. Pepperdine won the WCC last year and finished the season with a 15-3-3 mark, a NCAA Tournament Second Round appearance, an RPI of 20 and a No. 16 ranking in the final United Soccer Coaches Poll. The two teams have played just once before, a 2012 Pepperdine victory. That Sunday, IU will head to Los Angeles to face LMU, with both previous meetings between the teams resulting in draws.
The final non-conference weekend of the year sees the Hoosiers return to Armstrong Stadium to play host to Kentucky and Kansas State. It will mark the first time since 2010 Indiana and Kentucky have played each other with the all-time series being tied, 4-4-1. The contest will be a doubleheader with the Indiana Men's team, who will play that evening against VCU. Sunday's game against Kansas State will be the first ever meeting for the teams.
Indiana will remain home the following week to open Big Ten play against Michigan and Michigan State. IU will face the Wolverines, who took last year's meeting in Ann Arbor, 2-1, on Thursday. The Hoosiers will host Michigan State Sunday, Sept. 16 in a rematch of a 1-0 Indiana win last season in East Lansing.
A three-game road trip next awaits the Hoosiers, beginning with a Sept. 20 visit to Nebraska. The Huskers, who finished eighth in the Big Ten last season, drew with Indiana last year in Bloomington, 1-1. Indiana ends that weekend with a trip to Iowa, the first visit to Iowa City for IU since 2014. Indiana defeated the Hawkeyes in Bloomington last season, 2-1.
The annual battle for the Golden Boot will come Saturday, Sept. 29 in West Lafayette. Purdue leads the all-time series, 13-4-5, but in the past five seasons Indiana leads, 3-1-2. The two previous two meetings have resulted in draws, including a 1-1 tie last season at Armstrong Stadium.
The following weekend, Indiana returns to Bloomington to host Wisconsin and Minnesota. IU will face a Badger team on Friday, Oct. 5 that finished 2017 with a No. 29 RPI and a visit to the NCAA Tournament Second Round. Last season, the teams battled a scoreless draw in Madison. That Sunday, IU will host Minnesota, who finished second in the Big Ten last season and with a final RPI of 47. The Golden Gophers won last year's meeting in Minneapolis, 3-2.
Indiana's second Thursday night conference game of the year will be at Northwestern on Oct. 11. The Wildcats were third in the Big Ten last season and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament with a final RPI of 35. Northwestern picked up a 2-1 win last year in Bloomington. The Hoosiers will then visit Illinois that Sunday, with the Illini earning a 3-1 victory at Armstrong Stadium in 2017.
The final week of the regular season will see the Hoosiers host defending Big Ten champions Penn State on Thursday, Oct. 18. The Nittany Lions advanced to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals in 2017 and finished fifth in the United Soccer Coaches poll and eighth in the RPI. The last meeting between the teams resulted in a 1-1 draw in Bloomington in 2016. Indiana will close out regular season play with a trip east to play Maryland. The series with the Terrapins is tied, 1-1-2, with the last matchup ending in a 1-0 Indiana victory in 2016.
The Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals will once again be played at campus sites, with the top four seeds hosting Oct. 26-28. The Big Ten Tournament Semifinals and Championship will be played at a neutral site that is yet to be determined.
Admission to all Indiana Women's Soccer games is free of charge.
