MADISON, Wis. – Junior Erin Harper shot 3-over in Wednesday's final NCAA Regional round to advance to next week's NCAA Championships, the first individual appearance for IU Women's Golf since 1989.
She collected a three-round score of 213, coming in as one of three individuals to advance to Stillwater, Oklahoma May 18-23 at Karsten Creek Golf Course. Facing periods of rain and wind through the first nine holes, Harper made par on her first nine holes but followed up with bogeys on No. 7 and No. 8. The Dublin, Ohio native closed out the round with six more pars to finish off the round and came in tied for seventh overall in the Madison regional.
"Erin battled periods of really tough conditions in today's final round and she handled them really well," IU head coach Clint Wallman said. "Harp has really turned it up in postseason play and I'm ecstatic for her to play in next week's NCAA Championships."
Harper becomes IU's first individual to advance to championships since 1989 when Debbie Lee finished T19th. She's just the third ever individual along with Tracy Chapman in 1988 to represent Indiana as individual players in the championship rounds. As a team, the Hoosiers have appeared as a team nine other times.
"I am really honored to be representing Indiana at next week's NCAA Championships," Harper said. "Today's conditions were not ideal but I felt like I battled through the adversity to finish strong and grab a spot in Stillwater. I am looking forward to playing four more rounds to close out this season and use it to build upon my play for senior year."
The championship round will follow a 72-hole format which begins play on May 18 and running through May 21.
